BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

I have a 2010 BMW R1200R that I bought new. I got the touring package and items listed below but I did not get the safety package:

Touring Package
Chromed Exhaust
Luggage Rack and Brackets
Sport Windshield
On Board Computer
Centre Stand
White Turn Indicators
Comfort Seat
Panniers
I added a custom seat and Akrapovic Exhaust.

My question is: Is it worth upgrading to a 2012 R1200R and getting the ABS, etc? Also, would I be gaining anything else that is on the 12's that were not available on the 2010's?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I don't think it would be worth it unless you have put on a ton of miles on it(like 50k miles or more). I have a 2007 with 40k miles(purchased new 3/31/07), and I'm going to hold out till the new R1250R comes out. In one or two more years you will see a significantly more advanced roadster.

The newer ones are certainly a little smoother, cool instrument cluster maybe, and yeah 1 more hp.Tweaked here and there to be nicer to be sure. BUT.....my 2007 with 22k on it might get $7000 (I kinda even doubt that) on a good day. The new one would cost upwards of 15k plus out the door. My bike is still as nice to ride as the day I got it. I just don't see the $8000 difference (in my case) to get a new one.

You couldn't buy a 2010 in red …

Why not buy a 2012? I wouldn't buy an R12R without ABS. Add ASC and TPM, and you've got some additional insurance against going down.

I deliberately didn't as I wanted a well-sorted and highly-developed bike as the current bike is, and not the first of a new generation of bikes that might take a couple of years to iron the gremlins out.

ABS was available for the earlier models and is for the newest models. Hence this is not a reason for buying a new bike. The is no considerable difference between the earlier and the latest 1200 models. In fact you would be losing money. The latest 1200 models have probably the advantage that they have more potential for tuning the engine. Other than that I see no reason to upgrade ...

Thanks for the info. I've never had a bike with ABS and I am very pleased with my 2010 without ABS but after reading forum post, it got me concerned. I'd like to keep mine until there is a major advancement.

Must ask yourself a simple question. What will a much improved bike do for me? Do you need more power? More speed? Nicer colour? Your 2010 will stay the course for many more years. Unless they come out with outriggers or a power centre stand, a roof maybe, or a heater and windshield wipers, a micro wave oven, a chauffeur....

Thats the nice thing about the roadster, The new powertrain is introduced first in the GS and RT, a season before the roadster, as in the 1150 and 1200 series. The guys with the more expensive bikes are the test subjects .

True. So a water-cooled R1250R will be a 2014 model.

I bought my R12R last month specifically because I DON'T want a liquid-cooled bike. I've had plenty of them over the years, and prefer to have just one less level of complexity. Besides, as someone else mentioned, the current model is well-sorted and mature. Even if I was willing to go for a new model bike, it would be several model years down the pike before it was fettled. BTDT, thanks but no thanks.

The current R12R gives me all I need, thankyouverymuch.

Just a FWIW - ABS is no longer an option on the 2012 bikes. It's standard equipment (right across the BMW model line..)

To the OP - is it worth getting a 2012 to get ABS? If it prevents one fall-down I think the question is rhetorical. Only problem will be the difficulty selling the one you have without ABS. The vast majority of BMW riders I know wouldn't buy a BMW without ABS.

A subject that has caused some soul searching on my part.
I've been riding since the late '60's. I've been off twice. No injury, except to pride. Neither of these would have had different results had the bikes been ABS equipped. For me at least, I don't tend to ride on very heavily travelled (rush hour, big city slab) highways. As for trade in value? I'm 61. I'm not planning to ever have an issue with this. I don't have a BRS on my airplane either. (ballistic recovery system)
ABS will not prevent a deer from jumping out in front of me. It will not prevent the moron in the mini-van from not seeing me at the lights. It will not prevent, or be of ANY use in a rear ender.
Do I think it should be standard equipment? YES!
Do I think ABS will lead some down the road of false security? YES!
All things being equal, would I choose it? YES!
I do like to think I ride within my skill level. I give traffic ahead of me a wide berth. I ride as if I'm invisible.
Would I trade in a low milage R1200R just for ABS? NO!

My last three bikes had ABS and now I wouldn't buy a bike without ABS....

However, I did many many miles in my early days on bikes without ABS, with tubes and spoked wheels, some with only drum brakes, skinny tyres, and protective clothing was little more than an ordinary waxed cotton jacket with no armour. I survived.

It's what we get used to. As we get older and more safety conscious, we develop a desire to cover off ever smaller risks. Maybe in a few years time somebody might make a post asking whether they dare risk riding without their airbag jacket on a sunny day.

I think I am going to buy a 2012 R1200GSA. I have wanted one for a long time so I am just going to do it.
