20000km service

Post by keiko »

Hi i am approaching my 20000 km service on my 2009 R1200R and am wondering before i approach the 2 BMW dealers in town how much i should expect to pay for the service. I bought the bike privately so i have no connection to either dealership. If possible does anyone have any information regarding a maintenance schedule for the bike. I can also pursue getting the service performed elsewhere but i am not sure if this would be a good idea......or does the dealership support the notion that only they should perform the work to insure the high cost of maintaining a bike through them. By the way I absolutely love the bike and couldn't be happier.....I bought the bike with 16k and have not had any service done to the bike since summer of 2010, except to add a bit of oil. Thanks for your responses in advance....cheers ....ride safe.
P.S. How do i contact an administrator on this forum to deal with a forgotten password.....When i tried to log on to my account in order to post a message I was given a new password which doesn't work.....this happened on 3 different occasions.... Thanks again

It can be expensive but depends on your location also, which I don't see in your signature. That being said, I don't think there are many things that truly require a BMW dealer. Many of us do our own work. If you have a reliable independent shop whom you trust then they should be able to do it. One consideration may be if the bike is still under warranty. Some owners feel more comfortable staying with the dealer during that time.

You can contact the site admin by sending PM to Doug. He made the first post in the Membership thread in the announcements section just above the R1200R threads.

My Haynes manual (04-09) shows all the regular service; engine, filter valve clearance, and check a bunch of stuff like clutch system, brake system, etc. For the 20,000 mile service they add a new air filter element and bleed test the ABS. ABS on these bikes is something I never wanted to mess with.

My local dealer is excellent. They are great guys, do good work, don't rip me off, and give me good honest advice. (They are usually complimentary on my mods). Before the BMW car dealership had the motorcycle dealership, the local BMW motorcycle shop was not good. The local BMW club members all knew to drive several hundred miles to a better dealer for purchases and service.

If you bought the bike used, it is probably a good idea to let the dealer shop give it a good going over. If there is a local BMW Motorcycle Club near, you may want to check with them to see if one dealer is preferred over the other.
