4th to 3rd unexpected shifting

I was riding in 4th gear at a brisk pace on some back roads when I came across a bumpy patch of road. All of a sudden the bike shifted into 3rd, seems to have been caused by a bump, the rpm's went up to match the bikes speed and it caused sudden engine braking. Scared the **** out of me, close call.

Has anyone heard of anything like this happening?

I have to ask. Where was your left foot when you hit the bump?

That's a good point, operator error can't be ruled out completely. I normally ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs so my toe would not normally be too close to the shifter.

I'd do nothing and worry not unless and until it happens again and perhaps again. Ride over the same bump a few times and make sure the shifter is not contacted.
