Neutral light woes

I just bought a 1998 R1100r with only 8600 miles on it. The only problem with it is that the neutral light stays on no matter what gear your in. Any thoughts as to where I should start?

The neutral switch lives on the back side of the transmission, inside the opening of the rear housing, just in front of where the swing arm attaches to the transmission case. There is a flying wire attached to that switch that connects is routed out of there and connects to the wiring harness... uh, somewhere - I think it's typically zip-tied to the left side of the frame just under the seat?? I forgot without looking at it directly now.

If the light does not go off, it sounds like there's a short either in the switch, or in the wire, or the wire is pinched against something and is completing the circuit to the bike's chassis ground.

Does that help?

Oaktree,
Thanks! I found the connector for the switch and disconnected it for now. The dealer wants 350 to replace it, so it will wait for now.

Which dealer are you going to? Metuchen or NYC (I'm in Bloomfield, NJ)? My light takes a few seconds to realize it's in neutral... maybe they can give us a 'group rate'
