How to Change oil and Filter by MAX BMW

It's basic but I've seen the question asked a few times on this list. This is on a GS but except for removing the skid plate it's the same as on our R1200R.

I'm sure their will be discussion, but remember this is for someone that wants to learn how to change his/her own oil and filter not for all the experienced mechanics on the list.

Harry ... Liked the video.... MAX BMW is easy to do business with. Rose who does the parts sales always informed and it's good to get the candy. I have bought parts from them several times. Their web sight has lots of good general information....like the parts fiche.
Maybe some other videos over time....like valves and throttle ...... maybe.

I'm gonna have to talk to them about the M&Ms. I live nearby and get my parts in person, but Rose and Rusty never give me any candy (lots of good advice, but no M&Ms). I do have to give Max a lot of credit, the organization seems to work very hard to maintain a high standard of service.

Yes it is that easy. The routine fluid changes (engine/tranny/final drive) on the R are pretty basic pull the plug/drain/refill operations. It does save a little cash but for me the most important part of DIY is the enhanced understanding of the machine and the chance to double check little things like the guy pointed out in the video. If you're relatively comfortable with a wrench DIY and enjoy.

Interesting. I guess it's not necessary to put oil into the oil filter prior to installing it?

I just checked the factory service CD and it does not call for filling the filter with oil prior to instalation. I have seen that requirement on other bikes but have never really gotten my hands around the need for that step. My only guess would be for the prevention of air locking the oil pump.

One punctured oil filter in the middle of an S curve was enough excitement for me..

It just lessens the time the engine runs without oil pressure.. until the filter is filled with oil, there is no oil pressure in the engine. Considering how easy it is to do on a hexhead, no reason not to do it (although it does take 2-3 minutes to really fill the filter..)
