Which external torx sizes?

Shifter, rear shock adjuster, somewhere around the transmission, and probably parts I have not looked at require external (female) torx sockets. I am looking into buying a small set. Which sizes are needed to cover the applicable bolts on our bikes? I prefer getting the right tools, not use vise pliers or a hex bit.
The size question is easy for anything hex, external or internal. All you need is a metric caliper to measure the diameter or width. Is there a similar way to measure torx sizes?

Just go to Harbor Freight and buy a complete set, or your local tool supplier if you want to spend some bucks. . Their relatively cheap at HF and torx fasteners aren't going away, so you'll get to use them on other applications

That's the idea, but there are different size sets. Would E6, E8, E10, E12, E14, E16 cover the bases, or does it have to be a more exhaustive set?

Ok, so I found this:
http://www.advdesigns.net/prgr7piexsts.html
and then ordered:
http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-26750-Torx- ... 440&sr=1-1
Both sets have the same size bits.
It seems that the male and female bits use a different numbering system, i.e. a T20 will not fit inside an E20, and so on

get the cheapo HF set--the L shaped ones with the blue handle.
I suppose the 1150 is like the 12.
You'll use the 25 most, but the 30, the 20, the 40 and 45 all have their niches, and sometimes a 27 is helpful (not in the HF set). It is not expensive to get a bit set too.

Ace Hardware Stores carry Torx packaged individually so you can buy what you need without buying complete kits.
By the time I had learned of this, I had acquired 3 kits. My $3.00 Harbor Freight is my go to kit, and rides everywhere with me.

I'm confused - I have a R1200R and I have been using the "T" torx sockets to tune up by bike.
Should I be switching to the "E" torx sockets instead?

No, they are two different things and serve to work on different types of fastener heads. Think of Allen vs. a box wrench. That type of thing.

I'm wanting to check the transmission fluid level. My torx set is lacking a T-50 which is seems to be. When I called Bmw to Check the size they said it was a 8mm hex?
Does anyone else have a torx bolt for there transmission Bolts?
They are the two bolts on the right side of the transmission yeah? By the foot brake?
Thanks for any insight.

Hi MotoMax,
and that's a R1200R? What year? I have ONE plug on the right, not two, and yes, it's a 8mm hex.
