Hi,

This is my first post, I brought an edition 80 2003 in perth western australia 6 months ago and have put 3000kms on it, bringing it to 40,000.

I have just noticed that the front tyre is rubbing on the guard on one side of the tyre wall, has anyone else had this problem?

I am pondering on the method of fixing this, the guard doesn't look too deformed, just ever so slightly misaligned. I dont really want to cut the guard or drill new holes. Shims at the attachment points on one side?

Any tricks?

I'd guess the guard is slightly misaligned. Problem is you need to remove the wheel to adjust it - there's a bolt that goes up through the guard into the underside of the fork-bridge.

If you undo the 4 little screws on the fork legs does the guard move away from the fork leg on one side?? If so I'd say it's misaligned and just need adjusting.

Do you have the right tyre size, or is ypour tyre wider than 120 ?

yep, been having a look at.

I have removed and re-installed the fastenings either side of the wheel, has possibly had a small effect, I can push the guard away from the tyre and it will not rub initially, but I think the guard will move back to touching.

I will take it out for a ride and see if it moves back into its previous position.

The tyre is 120, so i dont think that is the problem.

Which side of tire is rubbing?

My Edn80 carbon fiber mudguard almost rubs on the right side of tire; the clearance is dependent on tire profile. The left side of the front wheel mudguard has plenty of room.

I have attempted to tweak the mudguard by loosening the attachments and "adjusting" (pushing the mudguard towards what I perceive as the correct middle position), then tightening the fasteners, including the screw located under Telelever bottom bridge. So far, I've not managed to improve the situation... but then I've also avoided breaking the $488.80 carbon fiber piece.

Possibly related (or not), I've always had some front brake grab that prevents the wheel from spinning freely by hand. I've done all the usual tricks when reinstalling the front wheel - loose clamp bolts, whack the front brake, slam down the front shock - but still get some brake pad/rotor friction. Note that this was never the case for our R1150R Roadster. One guess is that the left-side axle spacer for Rockster (which replaces the Roadster's front axle speedometer drive) is wrong length.

or just worn? it's only alloy, not steel.

True, but the spacer is static, one end adjacent to fork and the other in contact with the left wheel bearing inner ring. I haven't noticed any deformation due to compression. Will try a shim ring, or pull my "ABS/speedo" ring out from under the left brake rotor - bet that will solve the problem.

I figure that axle spacer is like the transmission input shaft: "just a few millimeters off here and there... no big deal", says BMW.

Incidentally, I was looking at my bike yesterday and noticed that the right side of the mudguard is indeed VERY close to the tyre edge (at the leading edge of the mudguard).

I think I'd noticed it before - but never really thought about it.

I have changed the tyre as the old one was at the end of its life, the new tyre didnt appear to be rubbing initially but it has started rubbing in the last 500km's.

I am going to put some spacers on the attachment nuts on the left side, which is the side that is rubbing. It is not actually the front of the guard that is rubbing it is up the back wall of the guard to about the 11 o clock position.

Tyre pressure is fine and i am running the correct tyre size and it is the btlaxe, which i think is the tyre the bike came with.

hi tommo, you dont seem to be having much luck with the tyre rubbing problem. pop in to autoclassics and ask to speak to their head mechanic, he is a top bloke and would point you in the right direction.
i live in mundaring tommo. on the 3/3rd a group of assorted bikes and blokes are going for a ride to narembeen if your interested.
