ABDECKRING part #16117681038
I know you said you rode to the dealer but just to be sure, is that a BMW part number? (I guess it is what with the Deutche description and all).

reason i rode to a dealer was, that to order it online shipping was more then a part itself

Thats a very valid question. Often the tank vent is connected to a tube that run towards the ground so any spillage is carried away by gravity. I don't know if this is the case for the R1200R but if BMW sells this as an official accessory for the R1000RR and fits our bike then I would be comfortable to assume that it's OK for both bikes.
I might even buy 2 and see if it fits my wife's F650GS too. It has a very similar looking filler cap and although it's mounted in plastic so rust isn't an issue it might stop rainwater getting into the tank. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean ..............

I have the gasket installed for 1000+ miles. On numerous occasions I've filled the tank to the top (the very top) and then ran it almost all the way down ( sometimes running highway speeds all day) with no problems. If their was a venting problem I would have had problems.
I haven't taken things apart to see if any water gets in but it looks like it will work, one way of the other it doesn't appear to cause any problems and (even buying three of them) it's the cheapest thing I ever bought for my Beemer.
BTW: Don, John M I ordered three gaskets so I have one for each of you the next time we meet up.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I just installed mine and I noticed the outer edges of the ring stick up a little bit. Is this normal (hard to tell from the photos of other installers)?

Mine kind of stuck up (only to the most critical eye) on the side closest to the rider. I was going to take it apart but it's really not that bad. Maybe when I have nothing to do.

Thanks for the reply Harry. Here is a photo of mine. Taken with an iPhone (damn, it amazes me for the detail in the shot). It doesn't really bother me too much for the peace of mind it offers that no water will get in and rust out my tank.

Harry - cool!
I'm back, and up for a ride somewhere.. (being off the bike for 5.5 weeks is just torture, especially with some of the places I visited and roads I drove on..)

Doesn't the tank vent to a charcoal canister?

Thanks for the tip on the ABDECKRING. Installed mine today. There was water in the wells the screws sit in (washed bike week and a 1/2 ago) and some rust visible where the tank collar joins the tank. The front and rear where the ring fits around the cut outs are pulled in as I tightened the screws, removed and reinstalled 4/5 times with the same result so I guess I have to be satisfied.
Thanks
John L.

Nylife,
Thanks for the tip. I installed my ABDECKRING yesterday. They only cost $2.42, so I guess that is a small price to pay for protection from rust.
When I picked mine up at the dealer, I looked at the other BMW bikes and the only one I saw with the ring installed was the S1000RR sport bike.

In that case, I will be looking for a slight performance increase, due to having a part from such a fast bike as the S1000RR.
