Gloves, Gauntlets and Athlete's Feet of the Hands!

Post by Caol »

Just a word of caution to my fellow riders!

I did not store my heavy (cold weather) gauntlets properly last winter. They were, of course, the last gloves I wore riding as the weather got cooler prior to putting up the bike for the winter.

This spring, again the weather was cool so the heavy gauntlets were in use, I found the skin on the palms of my hands drying out. I didn't think anything of it, put on some hand lotion and carried on. I was gone on a road trip (not on the bike) for a couple of weeks and the hands didn't get any worse, and then I rode for a couple of weeks and the dry skin/rash started to spread to the fingers. Then my sister noticed it and commented that because they appeared to be red/inflamed, maybe I should stop in at the doc's office and have it checked out.

Sure enough, a fungal infection! Athlete's feet of the hands! No big deal, proper application of appropriate meds and all is better.

Moral of the story: Don't forget to air out damp gloves and store them properly, and maybe even buy new ones now and again! And get rashes checked out sooner rather than later!

Just sayin'!
