Here is a quick update about the battery as the weather has been much colder now in NY.
Just as many have pointed out the battery needs to be warmed up in the cold weather before it will start, you can do that by turning light on or just cranking the starter a few times.
From this weekend:
First try to start the bike it barely turned, Second try pretty much the same, give it a minute try a third time almost this time, give it another 30sec, try again it starts like it normally does in the summer time.
Then for the rest of the day no issues

Hey Life, What temp was this start exercise needed? I can see that at 20 degrees F, but if it was 40 degrees, I'd have an issue with that much effort for a start up. Thanks for the update.

Would also be of interest to see how it starts @ 40 when it hasn't set for two weeks prior.
My Buell doesn't like setting for long periods, i.e. more than a couple of weeks, without being started. The R12R not as bad. Thanks for taking one for the team

another update, bike was seating for about a month, temperature was in 30's and it took like 6 tries to start the bike, kind of annoying, i still like the battery but i am not sure i can recommend it for colder climates, but then the rest of the day it was no issue.

Shorai is now recommending their 21a for some of the BMW lineup, amhik. Spoke to them yesterday about my ABS module initialization failure (at startup, in the colder temps, battery dips below 9v) and they agreed to send me the 21a for the difference in price between it and the 18a I was using in my GS.
Hope this helps someone,

Did you preheat the battery?
I haven't been in cold temps yet with mine but am interested how it performs. Good reports on ADV so far.
"Shorai LFX are much better in cold-weather conditions than other-brand lithium starter batteries, due to our eXtreme-rate formulation with low resistance. Down to about 20 degrees fahrenheit (-7C) most users find that they can start normally on first crank. If your headlight comes on at key-ON, it is good for the batteries to flow some current before cranking in cold weather.
The suggested headlight-on time before cranking depends on the temperature. If starting at 40f (5C), 30 seconds will help wake the battery and increase cranking performance. If at 0f (-17C), leave the lights on for 4~5 minutes before cranking. The result will be a better first crank, and longer battery life. Any other accessories that can be turned on before cranking can also be used for this purpose, such as heated gear, radio, etc..."

Interesting about the 21a, good to know...
Thanks for posting oalvarez.

yes i try to pre-heat it by turning lights on, but not for 4-5min, will have to try having things on for a few minute prior to trying to start
