Greetings from HOTLANTA, My name is Rafael former MGySgt USMC (26yrs).

I just picked up a 2004 R1150R, with 1563 miles (Private sale). It looks like the bike was just taken out of the create. The price was decent so I pulled the trigger. My other bike is a 2009 HD Electra Glide (To big for daily commuting). This is my first Bemmer and it is a GREAT BIKE! Wow how it turns!!!! and also very smooth . I just changed the oil, because I didn't know what type of oil the previous owner used. So, I used Mobile 1 synthetic 15W50, and a OEM oil filter. Was planning on the next oil change using the same oil, but with the K&N 163 (17mm nut). Your thoughts?


I was reluctant with the mileage but the previous owner suffered an injury at work (neck) and as a result got to fused cervical and just couldn't ride any longer. This bike is in unbelievable condition; so to buy it, considering the price of Petro was a no brainer. I have had big V twins for the last 20 years and had forgotten the pleasures of a more nimble and maneuverable bike (I am sold) . Great information in this forum, very knowledgeable. Any additional tips would be deeply appreciated.

Great to have you here and hope we can all be a help to you. You did well to go ahead on the oil change. Now all you have left to do (in order of importnce!)

1. Unless you know for a FACT that it's been done within the last 12 months ...Brake fluid all around--completely....easy job unless you have ABS....then a bit more to it. Including clutch!

2. Tranny and final drive fluid change----piece of cake

There's a guy around this board that may try to have you change the coolant..........................you really want to ........................heck, just ignore him!

How about some more details on the deal you got? I got a 2004 r1150r about 18 months ago from a couple that had just moved to Florida from California. I got the bike for $5,000. It had 6,800 miles on it at the time. It had the side cases but no windscreen, so I've replaced that, plus I also added a Givi 45L top case and just put set of Pilot Road 2 tires on her, so she's good to go. I'm leaving Tuesday for a five state swing through the southeastern US, and I'm planning on getting up with Wayne (TowerWorker) while I'm in Virginia in a couple of weeks (heck, he's the only one that seems to know how to change the coolant on these bikes )

Sounds like a good grab! However, if I've read your mileage correctly, I'd switch the oil back to a dino oil of your choice. These bikes are slow to break in, 10-15K miles or so, and I don't believe the bike will break in properly using a synthetic.

other important things to check---that the harness wires under the front of the tank are not pinched by tie wraps--search on the board under tie wraps

make sure you don't have the OEM quick disconnects--they've got to be ready to snap. Get replacements from Beemerboneyard.com

and change all fluids--oil. tranny, final drive, brake, clutch (and coolant if you have that option)

My Stella!, a 2004 also, just had her Diamond Jubilee turning 75,000 miles.

Greetings Guys, thanks for all of the tips. I am going to take all of your advice, especially the one about the Dino oil, including all other fluids. I got the bike for $ 5,700 bucs; the bike is Titanium Gray with BMW hard bags and a Windshield, Remus exhaust and a Rockster seat. In addition the previous owner threw in the original seal and exhaust. I will post pics ASAP. By the way thanks I found the coolant reservoir, it is on the left side of the bike, next to the Turbo, thx.

Congrats on the bike! Is that mileage a typo?

If not, you got a new bike, 1500 miles is bup-kiss....

+2 on the dino sludge, as the bike will drink a quart every 1000 miles or so up till 20-30k

I switched to synth at 28k miles....

Make sure you get the prop wash off the swingarm on the left side, it leaks out of the airbox.
