BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Well I have finally done it, purchased an R1200R. Its only my second bike, I wanted a new one but settled for a sub 2K mileage 2009 in black. After looking at the 2011 series with my local dealer, I did not like the black cylinder barrels so that left a classic with the silver engine, I know it’s only a small thing but I just did not like the new bike with a black engine. The classic worked out at over my budget and they would not offer me any discount or indeed a test ride as they stated they are only going to receive 4 for the year of 2011. Anyway I collect mine next Friday, it’s still looking like new and I am as pleased as punch.
Depending how I get on with this bike I might upgrade later to a new one before they bring out the water cooled version in 2012 or 2013.

Welcome! Congrats on your purchase of this fine machine. That you got one in the fastest color, BLACK, shows you already have an excellent eye for the breed.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a water cooled one.. the current one IS liquid cooled (oil used as the coolant) and it's probable BMW could meet any required emissions standards by simply adding a themo-controlled fan to the oil cooler. As it is now - the temperature is VERY stable (there is a thermostat..) if you are moving, despite change in temperature (the cooling system apparently is oversize for the engine.) I know that rumor has been floating around for a while - but IMHO - that's all it is.. a rumor. Especially since BMW just came out with the Camhead engine, and there is lots of HP potential waiting in that engine if they need more HP for marketing reasons (see the HP2 for how much..)

Would probably require larger and/or two-stage oil cooler.

Every extra horsepower out the crankshaft requires getting rid of two horsepower of heat...not a trivial matter.

That sounds very exponential and reminds me of aerospace-like math The Saturn V cooked up 17million HP to get the CM and Lander to the Moon.

The current level of HP on the R1200R is more than adequate to propell me into the afterlife should I choose to be so foolish I prefer inside the envelope math and taking the backroads...

It was the BMW dealer that informed me of the water cooled out in 2012/3, also I saw a spy picture of the water cooled being tested on the road in Europe, this is also an article on the very subject;

Was this one of the MANY BMW dealers who told members here there would be no '11 R12R? You might search for my prediction on that just about 12 months before BMW officially revealed the '11 model. Dealers are a veritable font of misinformation. It's the "expert" syndrome - they can never appear to be unknowing..

I also saw one artist's conception of a water cooled boxer - if you've seen spy photos, please post the link. I love seeing good photoshop work..

If this is the photo you're referring to - it has shown up in numerous places, but as I found, I'd find it impossible to even say this is a boxer engine, much less water cooled, but it probably is a BMW:

Are the R1200Rand the water cooled boxer articles worth chasing down the magazine?

The article on the R1200R has been discussed on this forum. You probably would receive more comprehensive reviews and answers to your questions about the 2011 model from the actual 2011 R1200R owners/riders on this forum who have spent more time with the bike than the magazine's tester.

Regarding the water cooled boxer, the article is pretty comprehensive with many photos of the proposed water cooled motor and discussion of the potential performance/emissions improvements over current oil/air cooled boxers.

The road test of the K1600GT/GTL is worth a look, if you have any interest in that bike.

I enjoy this magazine, especially the great photographs it contains. Many of them are half page or full page of the bikes, something you don't usually see in the other bike magazines, except in the manufacturers' ads.

Thanks. It looks interesting enough that I'll go ahead and subscribe, they have a start with the current issue option on the website, and the subscription is cheaper than the travel to find a copy.

The these "spy" photos always amuse me. They are kind of like UFO photos: Always out of focus with poor resolution from a crappy camera. Must be some kind of conspiracy or something....

Bill - just a FWIW - I used to be a publisher/editor.

LOTS of big pics generally indicates that other content is lacking. Pics replace a lot of words (even now doing my club newsletter - if I need to fill out pages, I start dropping in and resizing pics..)
