BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

On 3/1 I picked up a new 2010 Alpine White R1200R with the touring package. I also purchased a Streetguard 3 riding suit and a pair of Spidi gloves. I have put just over 250 miles in 4 days of commuting and fun riding. This machine is so easy to ride that I can't believe I didn't jump earlier. My family owned a motorcycle dealership for 30 years and BMW was one of the brands we handled during that time period. I've always liked riding them even though they were underpowered compared to the other brands at the time.

So far, I have ridden 30 degree mornings and 50 degree afternoons and loved it. The Streetguard 3 is impressive so far and I am really digging on the heated grips. I think I need a balaclava or something to keep the chin warm, but other than that, I am comfortable and confident in the suit.

This bike turns in so easily that I probably looked like an amateur leaving the dealership when I almost turned on to the shoulder getting on the highway entrance ramp. Now that I am gaining more experience with the bike, my control is much smoother and I feel I can be rather quick once the salt and crap is off of the roads. I am looking forward to better weather and clean roads so that I can really get to know her better.

This forum was a big help in getting me to pull the trigger on this machine.

I have a white one too and I think there the best colour!
Like the burnt orange one on here but that's a pro job.
This bike is as good as you are. If you can't ride well it will follow you!

Hey Jim - Congratulations !
Just yesterday I too picked up a new '09 Alpine White R1200R, and I concur with you - what a great bike! Light, nimble, quick and a blast to ride! (nothing new to everyone else here) With a K1600GTL on order, I wanted a naked bike, so no bags here - just ABS, BC, Heated Grips, Center Stand. Going to ride for a while before considering a seat change.

Looking forward to hanging out here (when I'm not out riding)

Congrats. I like the white, though my 07 is silver. You should not need "seats bloody screens" with the touring package. That model comes with a sane seat. BTW, I cut my factory touring screen down 2 inches, which removes the buffet and looks sharp. When you start doing 200-300 miles a day, though, you will need a real bloody screen.

Here's a tip for the newb: Mind the throttle coming out of low turns while you are getting used to this bike. The boxer is torquey and can release the rear wheel if you over-gas it.

Keiran, your bike rocks! I am familiar with it from my lurking days. My bike is going to stay as is for the time being. I like the sport screen and the touring seat. Keeps it comfy and still has the naked look I desire. The only farkle I can think I might want is some sort of throttle lock. Not until I have a significant slab trip coming up though. Maybe just the o'ring solution even then. On a side note, I spent 12+ weeks in the Land of OZ in 1992 and loved it. Was a business trip to Sydney.

We do have a quite the international crowd here and I dig that. I am in the St. Louis, Missouri USA area. The weather here this time of year is changeable to put it mildly. So far it has been fairly cold and wet, but the riding has been fine for the most part. I would like some sort of balaclava or neck wear to keep the chin warm. The heated grips are a nice surprise. I initially applied little value to these, but after using them several times, I am a believer.

I really appreciate the torque this thing has. I haven't investigated much of the upper rpm range. Only a couple of forays to 6,000 or so when passing etc. Lifted the front a time or two with the help of the road surfaces mostly. Always felt in control. She really likes to rev, but I do try to observe the recommended break-in. Especially with a big bore twin.

Ric, I like your collection. I've ridden a version of every bike you have. My first bike was a '71 Trailboss 100cc with dual range transmission. Was a great bike to learn on, but sucked as a motorcrosser. And that H2. What more needs to be said. I rode a couple of those in the late '70's and one was highly modified. I only took that one around the block once before I had enough. Talk about a light front end.

I'd agree - the blue looks fab. I recently bought a 2011 BMW Z4 and the "Deep Sea Blue" was the best looking color (IMHO) but living in the desert, the dust (even when it sits in the garage) makes any car/bike in a dark color nearly impossible to keep clean.

I am thinking of converting to castor oil to hurry up the break in period. Can't wait to really run it out. Currently I am out of town on business and it is driving me crazy. I have to look at my pc wallpaper several times a day. It has a calming effect in a stressful environment. Hope to be home by the weekend as it looks like a good day or two for riding.

As for some other color than white being fastest? I happen think the term "white lightning" exists for a reason.

Cool! I think the touring package is the best. The seat and the storage is something I've not had on a bike in a long time.
