How rare is the R1100R?

I keep watching the classifieds for a bike like mine. The R1100R seems extremely rare, and I never see one the same color as mine. Exactly how many were imported in the US? My bike is a 1999, how many were imported that year?

Less "Rare" and more of not a big seller

You see them come up from time to time - not a real premium on the price

As Boxermoose says, not terribly "rare", just not a huge seller (granted, it worked somewhat well here in Europe, hell, I've got one :D )

What colour is yours?

Nice!

I see you have the CHiPs device installed (just like mine).

I got the feeling, a year after buying my R1100R, that it's a bit of an "ugly duckling". But that soon passed the more I rode it. There aren't tons of them, they're a great bike, and a joy to ride as a "roadster" - ie content to ride at 100kph everywhere and enjoy the scenery, with tons of torque. only thing that irks me is the lack of a 6th gear. Other than that, it's perfect. Looks more like a "proper" BMW of old, without the air scoops / blockiness of the R1150/1200R. The R1100R has "classic" lines in my opinion. If prices of the R80R are anything to go by, we're at the bottom of the R1100R market now, the prices may go up again. Who knows? For me that's not what is important...

Here's mine:

What is a CHiPs device?

I gotta think the ugly duckling of BMW is the R1200C, at least in my opinion.

At first I thought the R1100R was a little funny looking, but the more I ride it the more I love it. I came from riding Harleys and the funny thing is I've had more people scream "nice bike" to me on the R1100R than my Harleys. People have actually screamed it from the sidewalk.

Well we must like ugly bikes because we have one of each. My wife the R1200C and I the R1100R.

It maybe not a sexy bike when coming from the factory. But with a little bit of fine tuning ... I like my sexy toy!

Thanks! But for the money I've spent on the bike I could have bought another one ... But I like this toy - more than any of its successors! Meanwhile this thing has around 115 HP/115 NM torque. Next thing is a 5.5" rim (still with my powder-coater) with a 180 tire.

I'm pretty sure he has; I believe that if he had been involved in designing the R1100R, it wouldn't have been so "rare" =D>

I don't know about how rare there are, but the one I owned left a lot to be desired.
Constantly in the shop trying to cure the surging problem, final drive seal leaks and at least for me uncomfortable ergonomics.
It did not stay around long, and I truly regret letting my 1985 R80RT go.
Hands down the best bike I have ever owned. I search for one all the time but to no avail so far.

Considering most buy the GS or RT, I guess in the grand scheme they are rare in the US. I bought my first in 2003, and it was a 99'. 8 years late I bought a 00', same color and all.
