OEM fuel pump alternative

As with most BMW parts, oem fuel pumps can be a bit pricey.
One guy in Europe had his pump quit, went to the auto parts store,
found a pump from a small Renault car that put out close to 110 lph
(~ 30 gph) and 3 bar (a tad over 40 psi) pressure for under $30 US.
That particular pump wouldn't be available in the US but I would think
there are others that would fill the bill.
Anybody happen to know or have done this?

To expand upon MACX's thoughts, what about moving the fuel pump outside of the fuel tank? My '04 R1150R is non-ABS so I've got a cavity under the fuel tank to utilize for something... I do have a Centech AP2 panel in the ABS area now.
To date I've already moved the fuel filter outside of the fuel tank, it now mounts above the air filter canister for easy access...

I've read about somebody doing that, even with ABS.
He mounted the fuel pump on top of the air filter housing.
I've got my filter externally, but I'm not totally sure about
having all that much rubber fuel line exposed to potential
damage - at least not with my luck!
Also I've been thinking about using that space above the
air filter housing for storing things like a small 12v tire pump
or whatever.
The filter is something that hopefully is something that would
be changed much more frequently than a fuel pump which
shouldn't be more than once in the life of a bike with any luck.
But it is certainly workable.

While relocating the filter makes maintenance easier. I see no advantage of relocating the pump. In fact the pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank. Putting it under the tank/seat may overheat it. I think I'd leave that one alone.

Ah, wasn't thinking about the cooling aspect of being inside the tank, good point and I'll leave it at that. The other previous point of the pump lasting the lifetime of the motorcycle makes sense as well. I'll stick to moving the filter outside of the tank and go for a ride, Thanks All!
So how about MACX's original post on this thread about alternative fuel pumps, anyone found anything?
