I have tried the new Ztechnic windshield for my R1200R. It seems to increase turbulence over and above just riding with no shield at all. Will appreciate some good advice. I am 6 feet tall with 31 inch inseam. elyag

I have a Parabellum mounted on my bike. I've been very pleased with over the years. I'm 6'1" and use the tall windshield. I had a Parabellum on my R1100R, which I was very happy with so I bought one for my R1200R.

There is a new Ztechnic? The original R1200R one from them had the same effect for most people.

My good advice - search is your friend. Windshields have been done about to death here.. a search should turn up LOTS of useful info.

There's a BMW sports screen for sale on the "Buy, Sell and Trade!" board. Heckuva deal.

I have about 4-5 windshield attempts on my work bench. Right now I'm waiting on a 20 " Cee Bailey to add to the collection. I am using the Don C block which increases the back tilt; have some more bending to do as it's not quite under the front hold down on the as equiped "tall" BMW touring braket. I am back to using the tall touring windshield from BMW that I started with at the beginning of the windshield quest.

What's making it more tolerable is custom ear plugs from the last big motorcycle show; way more silence than the disposible foam plugs...still noise but better; I think the 20'' screen may do the job.

I also have been running a 24" Parabellum on the BMW touring mount...I see over it; but it's a lot of screen. I may cut it down an inch and add a Laminar Lip at some point...

OK I actually got to the point where I road tested a new RT....ran the electric windshield adjuster all the way up and it was really quiet...also really insipid. I had the RT checked out for 24 hours and took it back after 20 miles...just not my deal.

There is a ton of stuff on the forum...keep us posted. John

elyag... I got a sport shield. I like the shield because at freeway speeds (80 or more) I don't have a death grip on the handlebars, the sport shield protects the instrument cluster, and it looks good.
I am new to motorcycling. I hear the R1200R is little affected by cross winds. I have been in crosswind gusts of 20 mph and was pushed around a bit...not bad. I hear a tall shield changes the bike's handling because the air moving around the bike changes... seems reasonable.
The sport shield's frame will only fit the sport shield while the tall or short shield BMW offers has the same frame. Also there is Cee Baileys and other after market shields that fit the BMW frame for short or tall.
As mentioned before there is considerable commentary about shields and the R1200R.
I also want a taller shield for winter but have other fish to fry or skin.

Whatever shield you chose, "it's all in the tilt." Do try tilting each shield to max its performance before you give up on it. There are lots of different ways to tilt the shield; try searching the forum, or simply use your own imagination.

Mike from SB, but posting from the warm and sunny Cayman Islands, where the diving is terrific!

I haven't noticed any effect on the handling from using my tilted 25 inch Cal-sci screen. It's fine even in heavy crosswinds. The only bad effect that I do notice is that engine noise is reflected towards the rider. It's probably more noticeable because of the big decrease in wind noise.

I was about to ask a related question. I've got a mounting block-tilter on the way (check your paypal in a few minutes!) now need to decide about a screen. I will be going with a tall one since I'll only put it on the bike when I expect to be going on long days with freeway speeds. The sport screen I have is great for 95% of the riding I do, but I go camping a few times a year with 3-4 hour stints on highways/freeways.

It's either Parabellum or CalSci ... any body have any thoughts on the one versus the other? With either one, I'll figure out the right height.

edit -- I'm 5'11" w/ 32" inseam. I ride the tall OEM R12R seat. On my GS (with seat in tall position) I had a tall Aeroflow screen and it was perfect. Right about nose height.

I don't think anyone makes a screen tall enough for you, but the tallest Cal-sci would probably be as close to the right height as you can get.

I'm 5'11" with 30" inseam. I have the sport shield with Don's block and it works well except for lengthy freeway trips. I got the 20" Cee Bailey and my teeth chattered due to the turbulence until I got Don's block. Now that windshield works excellent for me. The bike can run at 90+ all day with the Cee Bailey +Don's block.

I had about the first CalSci, and the sail effect was quite noticeable to me. Not bad enough to be unnerving except when following a truck with a noisy wake.. That was when Mark Lawrence thought making it more upright would make things better.. it made it worse. I finally tilted it back (with spacers under the bottom mounts - that was before I got the modified touring mount), and there was a big improvement. I suspect the sail effect will depend on what you're used to. My old K100RT was fairly awful that way - going around a jughandle in a strong wind was an exercise on quickly changing bike dynamics. My K75S much less so.. the R1150RS - moreso again.

I don't try to keep my head out of the air. I find I'm comfortable with air on my head even down to 30F if I prepare correctly for it (silk-balaclava, heated jacket liner with the collar up under the helmet), I just want the pressure off my chest when at speed. Clean air (no turbulence) is fine with me.. and tilting the screen back is what gives that.

I have the sport screen. It's a little noisier than with no screen, but it takes a noticeable amount of wind off my chest. I like it. I got a tinted one and it looks good, in my opinion, with my white bike. It is pretty expensive though, considering what you get.

I'm about your size. 6 feet tall, 32 inch inseam.

Before that I the smaller size V-stream and hated it.

I'm 6' with a 31" inseam. With a BMW regular seat (OK for height, but it's too narrow and slopes forward...it'll get replaced), the CalSci 18" with Don's Delrin block is marvelous.

I'm only an hour from CalSci. I think I'll just make an appointment and drive out there. Avoids all that pesky UPS back and forth...

You may want to install the DonC block before you go.. Tilting the shields back is really the trick to clearing up the turbulence problem.

Yup. Exactly my plan.

I also need to order a touring shield bracket, since I have only the sport shield. Anybody know which BMW dealer is offer a decent price on that bracket? Looks like $140 at MaxBMW...

Somwwhere along the way BMW dropped the list price from about $200 down to $140.
