Importing A BMW Motorcycle From Germany

Does anyone know if it's possible to import a BMW motorcycle from Germany? If BMW decides not to bring the new R1200R into the United States I would like to explore the possibility of bringing it in on my own.

Back in 1982, my brother and myself went to Germany and purchased 2 BMW K100RS drirect from the BMW factory. We rode them around Europe and back to them, they crated them up and sent them on to Australia. We saved alot on the retail price they would have been back home and some taxes, so yes it can be done!

I imagine that registering an imported bike is more problematic than importing it. Check with your local DMV and state DOT for details. I'd be interested in what you find out.

It may be easier to import from Canada. We occasionally get models that are not offered south of the border.

I would love to import a K1300R from Canada but the US dollar is lagging and I think canadian dealers are reluctant to deal with americans and the whole process of transfer. If anyone knows how to go about it please speak up.

Before I bought mine I was going to import from the states, it was not really a big deal....mostly because of the manufacturer..BMW is HIGHLY regarded.It was a paperwork deal only and a payment to Ministry, for the deal. Total cost was less than one thousand bucks. That was certified and plated...ready to go.

I would like to thank everyone for your feedback and insight. I have my fingers crossed that the new R1200R Classic will be brought into the United States.

Long ago, I brought my car and bike back from Germany. I have to be certain that my car and bike meet DOT & EPA, so you need to check with DOT, EPA and shipping company. The shipping company should know in & out procedures.
DOT would required that your bike meet highway safety standards (light etc.)
EPA would want your bike to meet emission standards (muffler etc.)
After you passed these two agencies, State registration should be easy.
If your bike does not meet the requirements, you might have to put up bond for your bike. They will give certain amount of time to correct problems. Check with these agencies. I hate to see your bike turn into scrap, cannot be on the road.
