Matching green Rockster tigerstripe/labels et al.

Post by RedJettaTDI »

Greetings all,

I am new to this forum and to Beemer ownership. I have had assorted bikes for the past 27 years, all older rice burners. My first was a GT550 Suzuki (lots of good times on that!) along with an old Kaw 750 twin, CB750 Honda, and a CB900 Honda Custom but I haven't had one for the last 10 years or so. I have gotten bike fever again recently. Loving the German technology of my wife's VW EOS, I recently got a VW Jetta TDI and love it! (Hence my login name) so when I started getting serious about a bike, a BMW was the obvious choice. I have been monitering craigslist and scored a 2004 Rockster R1150R last week. It is the one with the lime green tiger stripes, I'll post a picture once I figure out how to work this forum. It had a few scratches in the flat black paint on the tank, revealing the white primer as some other posts here say is rather common. For now, I just used a sharpee to fill this in and it looks much better until I can come up with a more permanent solution (any suggestions?). I love the bike but the riding position is a bit too leaned over for my soon to be 50 year old bones so I ordered a set of handlebar risers ($50) from Moto-Techniques and plan on putting a ztechnik touring windscreen on it (sorry to you Rockster purists). I know I may have been a better match for a R1150R or RT but this bike was less than 1/2 the price of any of those I found and tried and the Rockster looks so cool! Anyway, I have a couple of questions. First, after ~100 miles the stock seat is a bit hard on "the boys" especially when I am leaned over with the flat handlebers without the risers. I am hoping the more upright riding position with the risers will help this. However, could anyone reccommend a gel seat cover and/or lambskin seat cover that would fit this seat and make it more "cushy"? Secondly, I would like to customize my flat black helmet to match the color scheme of the bike. Does anyone have any ideas where one might get some some peel and stick stuff (like contact paper we use to use in the 70s to cut out peace signs, etc.) that would match the lime green color of the bike? I know, matching tiger stripe helmet, kind of geeky but could be cool. Thanks for any suggestions.

I was 59 4 years ago when I bought my 2004 Lime Green Rockster. I did not like the riding position and felt too much pressure on my wrists and my neck from leaning forward. The seat also was a problem as I felt myself always sliding forward against the tank.

Like you I had not ridden for a long time - but more like 20 years. I had had a Suzuki GT750, a KZ750 twin and various other Hondas and Kawasakis. Then I saw the used Rockster at a dealer and had to have it.

Now I've gotten to the point where I like the riding position and no longer have any discomfort. I don't ride distances - mostly commuting - but I've ridden about 25k miles. I'd recommend riding it as-is for awhile before making any changes.

You could buy the (expensive) stickers from BMW and be perfectly matched.
