I picked up a 2002 non-ABS R1150R (pre 12/2002 build) and am in the process of replacing the chassis wiring harness. I know that the oem part for this is part number "61 11 2 350 644". From what I can see, a new part is pricey... A salvage part is an acceptable alternative.

Does anyone know what interchange possibilities there are w/ other R1150 bikes?

Are there any recommended BMW part yards w/ knowledgeable techs that can help.

I had a problem once with my R1100R (fried wires/short circuit) and was told that the RT/RS harnesses will not work. Maybe the GS harness might work but some cables maybe longer and some connectors around the instrument cluster maybe different. If you have a non-ABS bike you may still be able to use an ABS harness as some connectors will remain unutilized.

However I would definitely go for a used harness for your bike. Check-out ebay and any of the salvage specialists like beemerboneyard, engeland motors and alike.

You need to talk with board member "challey", who likely has more wiring harness replacement expertise than anyone here.
He had a spare harness available at one time.
Do a search for his info.

If I remember right, Challey tried to use a harness for an ABS R1150R (found cheap somewhere)... and it wouldn't work for his non-ABS bike. He just figured he would not use some of the connectors... I guess it wasn't that simple.

For that reason, I personally would play it safe and only go for a harness that is specifically for a non-ABS R1150R.

Err, cause I don't have a choice? ;-(

It's a used bike and it is mechanically sound. The wire sheaths let go (ie, dried and cracked) on me. I guess they wore through and shorted...

I called the insurance co-- let's see if they are nice people... Anyone waiting for hell to freeze over?

A new harness for a non-ABS bike is in the $1,400 range and would likely have to be ordered from the Fatherland (not usually in the parts pipeline here in the states). That was too big a nut for me, so I had to find a used one.

As suggested by zeke, try Beemer Boneyard. I didn't have any luck with them but their inventory changes all the time so it's worth taking a shot. Other places to try are the IMBWR, the BMW MOA and eB*y. When I was looking, I actually found an '03 R1150R being parted out eB*y and even though the harness was from an ABS bike, bought it in the hope that it would work. It was relatively inexpensive (about $150 as I recall) and so worth taking a chance. I was hoping that the only differences between an ABS and non-ABS harness would be added circuits for the braking system but unfortunately some of the other connectors were also different so the harnessses appear to not be interchangeable. With help from the eyes of a fellow board member however, I finally got a salvaged harness from someone parting out an '03 non-ABS oil head on the IBMWR.

If the all that's wrong with the wires in the existing harness is that they are dry and cracked, and there are not too many that are bad, you may want to try and simply replace them (or the the insulation). Installation of the harness is not particularly difficult but it is tedious and very time consuming. I took lots of photos and marked and tagged every connector.

As to the part numbers, I only have access to limited records here at work but what I have shows the part number as 61117685383 for a 2003 non-ABS. It may be that there is a difference between 2002 and 2003 but I'm pretty sure that the harness is the same as the '03 for the subsequent years until the introduction of the hex heads.
