Aftermarket or retro gauge replacement for R1200R

Post by craigleo »

I'm thinking I might want to swap my 09 R's instrument panel for a more retro guage set up. I don't much care for the
trip computer and digital info. I just want a low fuel light, speedo, tach, analog clock and a neutral light. I'm not interested in reading very much when I ride the bike.

I think, actually, the R1150R's gauge set up is pretty cool looking.
What can I say? I like big round... gauges.
Anyway, does anyone know if their is a setup which will work for the R1200R?
Thanks

You might check the new Touratech "Streetline" catalog... they've got a pretty good selection of upgrade bits for the F800R (to turn it into a "F800scrambleR"); I can't remember if they did the dash but I know they've got a new headlight assembly, tail lights etc. It's pretty cool actually, especially with those huge chunky tires... worth a look just for fun.

Thanks! The parts guy at the BMW dealer looked at me like I was crazy...which of course, I am. But I think this retro gauge thing could be good on this bike.

Somehow with CANBUS I just don't think it's going to work. The instrument cluster is more then a simple cluster, it's part of the computer system that runs the bike..

You might get away with a guage panel from a 1200GS or 1200S. I think the dashboard could look better on the 1200R but I like the information it gives.

My smiling local friendly BMW dealer provides R1150Rs as loaner bikes, so I get to ride one of those back-to-back with my R1200R.

Some of it is just getting used to the cluster, some of it is the bike's whole "feel," but I much prefer the 1200R.

The 1150's panel has way too much shiny metal (sun reflections - ouch!) and widely spaced "idiot jewels" that are hard to make out in bright sunlight ... for my taste anyway.

However, going to a minimal gauge cluster with a small LCD screen below for the important bits (miles, computer outputs, warnings) and skipping the big gear display, could work.

What I'd *really* like to see for the R1200R is a dual headlight setup. I think that would look great on the bike.

Good roads,

When first I contemplated purchasing an R12 R, the dasboard seemed like a deal breaker. I'm just into large round retro instruments, and headlights. Once I went for that fateful test ride, I thought I would have to find a way to change the instruments. However, I have found that I just keep my eyes on the road, where they belong, and no longer notice the instrument cluster.

The bike just keeps getting better and better.

Yes, thanks for the responses. In reality, the instrument cluster is a small potatoes issue. I am probably just thinking too hard about putting wings on a frog.
Usually when I go down farkle road, I go to the garage, get on the bike and blast down the coast highway for about an hour.
That usually snaps me out of it.
