This week I tried out a R1100RL. It was a very low mileage 2001 in pristine condition. Here was my impression after a short 30 minute ride on the back roads in New England.

Feels heavier than I expected (coming of a K1200RS I was surprised) but was very balanced.
The upright position took a little getting used to, used to more sportier position leaning forward.
The gearbox is even more a box of rocks than my K bike was, but only has 7500 miles on it.
The windshield might be a sail in the breeze.

I know I could get used to this bike, but initial thoughts were they might be some wind management issues due to the size of the screen. I would appreciate any experiences about how this handles in the wind, as there is a lot of it in the mountains where I ride.

Also was wondering if sportier bars (like the S?) might suit me better.

Overall the bike was a beauty and a delight to the eye. So am still considering it.

Firstly there is no problem with the windshield and the rideability of the bike. The only issue may be your own size and the noise created by the windshield. That is something you will have to find out. I had this windshield when I bought mine and I found the noise terrible (I am 1.72 m tall). Hence I removed the shield and replaced by a small dingle fairing.

With regards to the handlebar there are aftermarket solutions for example from a company like wunderlich /check out this one http://www.wunderlich.de/Service-for-yo ... rnational/). They have a bridge which is mounted on top of the original bridge and you could then use a handlebar from them or use for example the handlebar of the r1150r rockster.

The bike is a very fine bike. Just make sure it has at least ABS. Heated grips, the luggage rack and the cases would be an additional bonus.

Thank you. This particular one does not have ABS, which might be show stopper for me. I loved the ABS on my K bike!

I picked up my 2001 R1100RL spring 09 and love it. She came with a Cee Bailey’s windshield on it that works great at < 45 mph, anything above and it creates obnoxious buffeting and is very noisy. Take the windshield off, and it’s a whole different ride. As far as ABS and heated grips, I’ve never owned a bike with either, so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing.
