R12R's have self-cancelling turn signals!

A feature that I loved on my K75RT.

This made me laugh, I'm not young, but I remember discovering the self cancelling turn signals too. I think my reaction to the turn signals as I was riding was, " Wow the turn-signals turn off, I really like that!". If discovering small things is a reference to feeling young I'll take it every day!

Seriously, I thought that BMW did away with them.

Took a ride this morning, and after making a turn at an intersection, went to turn it off, but it was already off. When I got to a quiet stretch of road, I experimented. Aah Ha!

They could cancel a bit sooner though. IMHO it takes a bit too long for them to cancel. But than there might be some sense in that which I have not discovered yet

Next time you're stuck at home on a rainy day, why not dust off the old owner's manual and give it a look? (Totally un-American, I understand) Self canceling turn signals are just one of many features awaiting your discovery. Geez.

I agree that they take their sweet time to cancel, around town anyway.

When making l-o-n-g freeway lane changes, however, I've had them quit before I'm all the way over on the other side of 3 lanes. Maybe that's why they seem short...

The R1200R has hazard flashers! After becoming VERY annoyed that there was no hazard switch (I'd have taken it as an option) ... I pushed both indicator buttons together.

And if you turn off the key, they will stay on.

An owners manual is a wonderful thing.

and when your about to buy one, all these posts are fun to read.......nothing in the brochures about self cancelling indicators.

It's a distance/time formula that's used. If you travel ## meters with them on - the system assumes you've made the turn. If you leave them on for ## minutes while travelling at some speed - the system assumes you did the lane change you intended to do. And the formula is timed out when the brake light is on (so sitting at a light, waiting to make a turn won't time them out..)

It's fairly clever actually. I rarely have it time out and turn them off when I don't want it to (once in a great while), but I also usually do end up cancelling them myself, just to keep in practice.

Its funny, I asked my salesmen if the bike had self canceling turn signals and he told me no. But I discovered it by accident .

Well, there are those universal concentric triangle hazard icons on each signal tab that might give a hint. For a truly unusual setting, look up how to turn on the "city light" & tail light.

As for whether the turn signals cancel too soon or too late, well, if you need them off, you can always cancel manually. On the other side of the coin, <rant> there are occasional traffic situations where I want them to stay on longer, and it would be very nice if they were programmed so that if you pressed the desired turn signal button while the signal was already on, the signal's time/distance counter would reset to its initial values, but nooooo, you cannot extend the time/distance the signal will flash if it's already on. The only way to extend signaling time/distance is to cancel the signal or let it cancel automatically, and then press the button again. Now, when I'm in dicey traffic I don't want to have to consult the dashboard to see if the signal has canceled, so I've developed the technique of hitting the cancel button followed immediately by the desired signal. I would allow BMW to reprogram their firmware per my design royalty-free. </rant>

Plenty there! Funny, I cannot read manuals at home (and my jungian personailty type confirms this predilection) but at my workaday desk over a coffee, I can read the d*mn thing cover to cover. So, thanks to your .pdf link, NOW I know ...

Yep ... 10 seconds, or covered a distance of about 200 m before cancelling. Very cool! Also, thanks for the e-version of the manual. Nice touch!
