Engines dies suddently

Here's hoping that some one in the great beyond will have experienced this and resolved it.

Problem
Bike starts and rides as normal for several miles then suddenly dies.
After a little rest, 15 minutes or so, it fires but only on tickover. Hit throttle and the engine dies.
Leave for some time to cool down properly. Engine will fire and rides as normal but after several miles dies suddenly.

I have it with a friend at the moment who says he's been through the fuel system and is convinced all is well in that regard, does anyone have any idea what may be causing this to happen.

I've worked on motorcycles most of my life. Although I'm no expert I've managed to avoid taking my bikes to a mechanic except for a couple of rare occassions.

Whenever diagnosing a problem like yours I always think what would be the most simple cause of the problem. Whenever I jump to the conclusion that its something major, like fuel pump, ECU, injectors, etc. I'm almost always wrong. Considering your problem, I would first rule out the possibility that you have bad fuel. Think carefully about the last place you fueled up. Was it a different place than normal? Did the problem start after refueling, or at the end of your last tank of gas? You might have water in your fuel? I would either siphon all of the fuel out of the tank and replace it, or immediately try some fuel dryer additive.

This may or may not be your problem, but I would try all of the simple solutions first.

The symptoms described would point to the fuel system. If I was you I would check (or get it checked) the fuel filter which is hidden inside the tank. Also as said in the previous reply check the fuel for water and the reservoir for any contamination.

I also agree with Oliver. Could be the fuel filter.

Another thing that came to mind is the big black charcoal canister. I've heard that if you overfill your tank repeatedly it can become saturated with fuel. This fuel could migrate from the canister to your throttle bodies and flood the engine??? You may want to unhook the tubing going to the canister temporarily just to rule out the remote possibility of this happening.

Another possible cause maybe the hall sensor which on some occasions caused problems when warming ... At least this is what spome experts in Germany have reported and in our German "boxer-forum" we have a similar post at the moment ... Suggest you search the message board for the key words "hall" or "hall sensor" and you'll find some hints on how to diagnose and possible replacement.
