Hi There,
I realize I haven't properly introduced myself. My name is Julie and I live in Southern California. I just bought my 2004 R1150R (Non-ABS) last Sunday and I'm loving it so far.
I realize that maintenance on beemers can be expensive if you don't do the maintenance yourself. So, I'm hoping to find someone who knows how to wrench that lives in the general vacinity and is willing to teach me. I can pay in beer (or other preferred beverages)!
My bike seems to have been maintained very well. So, I'm not too worried about it yet. The previous owner did his own 24K mile maintenance, but did not balance the throttle bodies.
I'm feeling a lot of thumping, so I'm wondering if it's time to balance them.
If you live in southern california (San Diego/Orange County would be best), and would like to impart your knowledge on a newbie, please let me know.
Thanks!

Welcome,
For synching throttle bodies I would definitely recommend a pair of these
http://www.marcparnes.com/BMW_Throttle_ ... g_Ring.htm
I have found them to be very usefull.
Of course you will need vacuum gauges or a suitable substitute. This is very good for twins,
http://www.rlmotorcycles.com/cgi-bin/eS ... ct=TwinMax
The price seems to have gone up since I bought mine, maybe you can find it cheaper elsewhere.
Info on this site will tell you everything you need to know about the RR. I was able to tear mine down to the flywheel, and get it back together, mostly by going through old posts.
Especially this one, http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f ... ve&start=0. Thanks CycleRob.
I am located in south Orange County, and would like to see another RR with the hoses and wiring in OEM form, and location.
I would like to reinstall my carbon canister, but kind of forgot how the hoses run.
Could show you the must have tools, and basic disassembly tips for body work and tank. Very easy once you've done it few times.

Welcome to the board! You will find a lot of great knowledge here and checkout these links for excellent instructions on valve adjustment and throttle body syncing:

and

Not trying to hijack the thread, but the Marc Parnes website indicates that the throttle rings are no longer in production. I'd love to get one, or a pair.
Do you think if we had a large enough order we could them back in production? Any interest?
Anyone have an extra or two they are willing to sell?

Re: I want to wrench--Teach Me Obi-Wan
Thanks Brian and Zeke.
Brian--I'm in North San Diego County, so that wouldn't be a bad ride for me if you're willing to help me out. I'm just taking a guess about the throttle bodies. I've read that when they're out of sync that there is a lot of vibration. I wouldn't describe what I'm experiencing as vibration per se. It might just be that I'm not used to the boxer engine. But, it seems like there's a lot of thumping on the right side.
Like I said, the guy who owned the bike before me did the 24K mile service himself, but didn't touch the throttle bodies. I think he mostly changed fluids and the easy stuff. He also replaced the rear brake pads.
My bike is completely stock from what I'm told, so the hoses should all be in their original place.
I just don't have the cash right now to buy a Twinmax. I have basic tools, and plan to get more of what I need when the finances settle down.

Julie,
Zekes right, sorry about the bum lead to the Marc Parnes site. Too bad, those little rings make the adjustments much easier.
Also right about the adv site, I got a lot of good info there too.
The noises, vibration, and especially the torque reaction, of our RRs are quite different than the Japanese in-line motors.
Takes some getting used to if your switching from a Honda or the like.
If you want to do the ride up to Laguna Beach some Sunday, pm me from the members section, and I'll give you directions.
Takes five minutes to do a throttle body sync, and we can check the common problem areas. Fuel line quick-disconnects,
wiring chafing (need to cut plas-ties under the instrument panel). Those are easy. Hopefully the clutch fluid is fairly clean and odorless. That can be a pita to take care of properly.

Sweet. Thanks Brian!
I definitely take you up on that within the next few weeks.
