This bike is costing me money !!!

And I'm not talking about farkles...they do have some return on investment. And besides, I think I'm done foolin' around droppin' loads of cash on it. But take yesterday for instance. Fill it up to meet the club on the season opener ride to Starved Rock...maybe $ 13.00 bucks. Not a big deal. Eric and Sue bought lunch, so again, no big deal. Nice easy ride out with me leading and Eric and Sue following behind on their bikes. Come to a favorite stretch of road, gentile sweepers going uphill through farm country with trees on both sides, 55 mph limit, so I wick it up a bit thru the first 4 gears, then back off, and right at that exact moment BOOM !!!! And I'm a $ 140 dollrs poorer. The Kendall County Sherriff I met at the top of the hill didn't have much of a personality.....or a forgiving heart. Prick. 76 in a 55 = $ 140 in fines including the cost of defensive driving school for 4 hours someday soon. This never happens on my GS, or my Yamaha now that I think of it. What's wrong with this bike ?

I hear ya. I met my friendly local Comal County Sheriff's Deputy on day three of owning my 12R. He was nice though and only gave me a warning for 47 in a 35 zone.
This motorrad is really easy to overdo it with. Found a new road nearby, speed limit 45, nice sweeping turns (very much in the "why buid a straight road when you can build a twisty one?" tradition of Germany). I got on it a little bit, glanced down and *gah* I was doing 64. I backed it off to 50 and felt like I was barely moving.
No complaints though - I love this bike!

CHP clocked me at 62 in a 35 last year on Mulholland. He was a good guy though and wrote me up for exceeding 55 in a 35 so I could attend traffic school. Still, $276 + traffic school. That could have gone to tires or something a lot more fun than helping California's budget crunch.

This only works when you are being timed by a Police car.... Ok you are moving say 75 in 50 zone or so..you see the lights and think oh oh.... SPEED UP ,DONT PULLOVER ,increase speed for 30 seconds significantly. Before cop can react and hit the gas ,pullover. He will be so confused. When he asks why were you speeding tell him that your wife ran off with a cop a few weeks back and when you first saw him ,you were frightened he was bringing her back!! Soz if you've already tried it and it didnt work.

Funny that you should mention the speeding thing...just yesterday some of my fellow motorcycle instructors made comments that BMW riders never ride fast. I responded saying that they must have just not noticed me as I flew past them....lol
It is a rush when I pass someone on the highway and then look down at the speedo and realize just how quick these bike accelerate.
Love this bike!!!

One Maryland State police officer is aggressive about speeding motorcyclists. Doesn't even show his badge:

This was discussed to death on avdrider. His badge is on his belt, but it is hard to see. The guy on the bike was doing wheelies on the interstate and blasting though traffic. The officer certainly could of handled it better. Don't know anything about him being arrested for videoing the stop.

The reason they don't think Beemer riders ride fast is that we are so far out ahead of them they never see us, or are too busy fixing "issues" on the side of the road that they miss us going by at warp speed quietly

I never ride anywhere without my Valentine 1 radar detector.

I have heard that the police at least here in Canada only turn their machines on shortly before "shooting" you so that these detectors in practice don't really work
The other day I was on the motorway overtaking a lorry when suddenly (from nowhere!) the police shot out and followed me. It turned out that they wanted the guy behind me...the rest of the journey I was riding like a nun...

..sorry, small thread hijack in progress... that was really cute...
I've been lucky around here so far - I passed an unmarked car at hyper-legal speed on an off-ramp so I could beat a line of trucks to a hill - he flew up behind me and gave me a finger wagging through his window, then a thumbs up! I guess he felt sorry for me in the pissing February rain? I rode the rest of the way home like a vicar, myself.

Yea. I've got both the GS and the R hardwired for my Passport X50, but I kind of decided a year or so to slow down some and enjoy the enviroment I'm in, instead of enjoying flying thru it. So I stopped riding with it. I've done the H.A.R.D thing, and then switched to Marc Parnes LED set up. Works well on the GS, but it won't on the R. And since it seems, at least here in the Midwest, that the Police are writing tickets as a measure of job security and that the R would rather run than walk, I've got some decisions to make and probably an investment in another H.A.R.D thing............more money

I passed a FORMER Payson County Sheriff (AZ) on a double yellow in the twisties. We were trying to put enough distance between us and our Harley buds to be able to finish the first cold one before they pulled in. We weren't able to because she called out the whole force to apprehend us. The Harley guys thought this was priceless; badass Beemer types and all that. Long story short: I plea bargained the dangerous driving charge down to passing on a double yellow and got "off" with a $716 fine. Since then I still do twisties at speed from time to time, but I now do them without using any brakes. It slows the pace, but the fun and challenge is still there and I see a lot more of the scenery. For me now, slower is better. Also, the incessant racket of a radar detector just spoils a peaceful ride/drive so I don't use one.

You can hear a lot of things. My radar detectors warn me of police all the time. Spend the money on one instead of the cost of a ticket. That is one I have heard.
Geezer, I have the Marc Parnes LED set up on my R, works just fine.

Hey Mike... Speeding tickets ain't no fun. Several months age I got a speeding ticket in my car for 87 in a 55... over three hunderd dollars. In Louisiana we have an option. One takes the ticket to the public prosecutor and requests a reduction... it was an election year and fortunatly reduce to one sixty.
I recently got stopped going through a small town on my bike for 57 in a 45... I first noticed a police man behind me with his lights on... I pulled over to let him by and he pulled over with me

the officer let me go with a warning before I could get my helmet off.???
The problem is located in the throttle

... I discovered my car has a loose nut behind the steering wheel... Is any bike faster than ours ????

This is one reason I like my nice quiet stock exhaust can. " Officer I am NOT a threat to your little town. In fact I am not even here. This is NOT the motorcycle you are mad at." "These are not the droids you are looking for"
You can raise hell outside of his jurisdiction with the radar detector on.

O.K.- sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else...(I did a quick search)- so what is the best radar detector? Do I need to get one particularly for Canada or can I buy anyone? Which kind of radars do they detect? I have looked at the Valentine 1 but it seems quite big? What is with the Escort Passport ones or the Beltronics? See this site:

I thought they were illegal in Canada.
