Looks like AltRider skid plate will fit on the R1200R, and it looks more rugged than the high grade accessory skid plate for the GS.

Wonder how it fastens to the engine?

The GS skidplate fastens with rubber standoffs that I would guess are designed to sheer before damage to the engine case happens. They also probably keep some vibration from the skid plate from happening.

Dunno what the BMW GS one costs since it was given to me (I had to buy the mounting hardware - that was about $55 IIRC..) It is sturdy enough for my purposes - which is to protect the oil filter from objects thrown up by the front wheel (had one filter holed by something - it was more excitement then I'd prefer to have happen again.)

The site implies that it uses the stock mounting gear, but I totaled up the parts on Max's site for the mounting bits and it was over $70(!). Apparently the basic GS bash plate is no longer available, just the mounting bits. Only the fancy one which includes everything for $320 although not sure it it fits under the R or not. I probably should get something - the ride home in the rain the other night left the bike covered with mud from front fender to tail rack (even with the new fender extender (Wunderlich's) which did a good job keeping the mud off the oil cooler).

Looks nice, would love to have it, but since I ripped the GS skid plate right off my R in Utah the mounting points have sheared bolts sticking out of them... no plate for me without more work than I'm willing to do.

I dropped my bike of at AltRider this morning, and they mounted their skid plate on it. Consider it confirmed.

Find pictures of peckhammers bike at the below web site. The Altrider skid plate fits exactly the same as the GS "accessory" skid plate
- it requires GS mounting hardware, I'm told.

Sorry I haven't respond yet, lots going on, and I wanted to figure this solution out completely so to not mislead anyone.
as psycle.vt said it is about $70 for all the parts/components to correctly upgrade the R1200R sump mounts up to the level of the GS. But is the right way to do it. We don’t and will not offer cheaper through bolt solutions because there is too much risk of really damaging the engine cases.

we have decided create a complete part for the R1200r which includes all the required components to install the skid plate to help offset the costs. retail for the R1200R skidplate will be $311; that's only $37 more then the standard plate. We will be shipping that out tomorrow.

i will post the product page shortly so you can preorder if interested in the first batch.

Now that we've confirmed that the AltRider skid plate fits both the R 1200 R and R 1200 RT with the right hardware, it's available for order.

The skid plate for the R 1200 R and the skid plate for the R 1200 RT come with two vibration isolation mounts, one skid plate mount bracket, and all the other hardware necessary for installation.
