Fair Price for 1999 R1100R?

Post by combatcarry »

After owning every Japanese brand, Harleys, and a KTM I'm ready for a change. I've sold all my other motorcycles and I have cash in hand!

I think I've fallen for the BMW R bikes. I have two in my sights. Here is the first http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad ... 144&lpid=1 Here is the second http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-050-MI ... 500wt_1182

What would be a good deal on these bike (for a cash transaction)? Are there any particular things I need to look for? Should I be overly concerned about the mileage on the first one?

Thanks!

Of those two I'd prefer the R1100R. That mileage is no concern. The riding position is more upright on the R1100R, and a little more leaned forward on the R1150R. There is more aftermarket stuff available for the R1150R. Both those prices look sensible to me...

1. On both, with the back wheel off the ground, take a firm grip of the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and try and wiggle it. Then at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock...
Very slight movement at either - no bother.
Movement at 3/9 but not at 12/6 - swing arm bushings - need fixing, but no big deal.
Movement at both 3/9 and 12/6 - walk away - final drive is screwed.

2. Check whether the cam chain tensioner upgrade has been done. (cheap and simple, but necessary.)

3. Check that the alternator belt has been replaced on the R1100R.

How much are we talking about if the final drive is shot? I won't buy the bike if I suspect that it is, but I could always misread the amount of play that is normal.

Also, how can I check if #2 and #3 are completed? How much would those cost (approximately).

Thanks so much for your help! I would have never known these things to look for.

I don't know a price for the final drive, but it is well into 4 figures.
Just ask the seller on the other two. around a hundred for either...

Went ahead and bought the bike... I couldn't find any play in the rear wheel whatsoever. He was unsure if the alternator belt had been replaced or the cam tensioner. I'll have to find a way to check that myself.

My only worry is I can't get the ABS to work... I'm starting a new thread. I wish I would have known the "scenario" for the ABS lights before purchasing. I'm still not too upset I've ridden bikes forever without ABS, but it would sure be nice to figure it out. I paid $3500 cash. The bike is by no means perfect, but with a little elbow grease and a few parts replaced I can make it nice.

The alternator belt here in Germany costs around 15 Euros hence in your part of the world maybe 20 bucks. Replacing the same is a matter of 15 minutes. If unsure I suggest changing it (depending in the mileage - it is supposed to be changed every 50 000 kms).

I also have a 1999 R1100R and I never changed the cam tensioner.

Best regards
