I currently use a OLD access database app that a user made for me back in 2003 (yes 2003), and it finally needs replacing/updating. I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in updating the app for me - keeping it in access is fine with me, or if you're more comfortable with another way to do it, thats fine too. I'm assuming there are easier/faster tools out there now than access for record keeping! Involved would be:

-Grabbing all the old data and putting in the new program
-Reuse of old interface or making a new one if thats easier - use current one as a very good template
-ability to manage members and expirations easier (its very manual for me now - some sort of automated or batch "you need to renew" email would be great.)
-some other small odds and ends.

So, anyone interested in helping out with this little project?!?

Hi Doug.

I develop software for a living. I see your forum is running in the PHP framework, and it would be ideal to move your user-database into r1150r.net as a secure web app. This would also make it easy to run cron jobs to check expiry's and auto-email users.

The challenge for me is always time and I do have a project backlog of several months. If this project is very simple and something I could hammer out in couple of afternoons, I may be able to help. I would need to know more details about your existing access database including all fields you are tracking, maybe a few snapshots of your current system. Feel free to send me a private message with those details.

Best case scenario would be July or August before I could dive into this. Hopefully there are other programmer/riders in this forum that will also answer the call that are in a better position to help you sooner, but feel free to keep me in mind, Doug.

Thanks Blair, I appreciate the reply. I was hoping for something a little sooner, but I will take what I can get! I think this is more like a 1-2 day effort for someone who is a programmer. Its a pretty easy and straightforward system.

Are you referring to integrating the website too? Right now, this is a separate application from the site. But WOW wouldnt it be fantastic to somehow automate paypal the member app and the signing up of users and applying permissions online! That would save me so much time. But alas, I know this is a LOT of work to do and will likely break with the next paypal or php update. I think its safer for me to just have a separate app?!

I see this forum runs with phpBB software, which means php and mySQL are already up and running on your server. I don't think I would immediately attempt integration between your user database and this software, because it indeed might break with future versions of phpBB or your PayPal interface. However, another database can easily coexist on your system and a few php pages is all it would take to spark up a simple user database. That is what I really meant to say.

If you don't find another solution sooner, lets chat on this topic in July/August

Ok, I see. I missed that part - you were talking about making a web application to manage users.. I'm thinking about a more secure standalone windows app.

I write web apps as well as desktop apps for Mac OS X and Windows PC. Web apps are now very secure (https and password encryption) and is what I recommend to all my clients. If I end up helping you out, we can go either way depending on your needs and comfort level. Nothing to worry about either way.

I have to get off the computer now and back to my Corona on the beach ... family vacation in Mexico for two more days before the trek back to Canada. Hope the streets are finally swept when I get back so I can unleash my new R1200r for the first time
