First post Battery question

I am the new owner of R1150R. The bike has not been ridden for about 3 weeks and I won't be able to ride for another 4 weeks at least.
I would like to trickle charge the battery using an optimiser.
Do I need to remove the tank to do so?
I have read that it is possible to charge through an accessory socket?
My bike is 2004.
Will it have one as standard and if so where is it?
If not, is it possible to charge via this method and if so do I need a special charger.
There may well be other issues that I am not thinking about that member's will have experience of and perhaps can let me know.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Paul

Congrats on the new bike!

There should be an accessory socket down by your left foot. I am pretty sure they are standard on all models. You need a BMW plug fitted on a trickle charger. Plug it in and you are good to go.

The accessory socket is located on the left side of the bike just above the foot peg. I am not sure about charging the battery through the socket, so I cannot comment on that.
If you recently got the bike check to see if the previous owner installed a pigtail on the battery, just pop off the seat and shine a flashlight under the tank. I also purchase my RR used and only discovered the pigtail when I was about to remove the tank, it was sort of jammed up towards the front of the bike and was hard to see initially.
I think any type of trickle charger will work. I got mine at auto zone for less than 30 bucks US. I don't leave it on the bike full time, only if I have not ridden in a long while. Never had any issues.
Good luck and congrats on the new to you bike!!

Battery Tender Jr works very well and you can leave it on all the time.
