What fits?

I searched around, but could not find much.

It worries me that my pegs are grinding down too quickly... no, I didn't crash ... just from "normal" canyon riding...
So was looking at the prices (which seem high)... then I started thinking about finding something that just fits...

How about a thread about what parts from OTHER bikes (if any??) can we fit on ours. or cheap aftermarket replacements.
Especially fragile parts like levers, pegs, mirrors, turn signals, brake and shifter pegs, etc.

You know... "just in case" parts to carry around for longer trips. Or is everybody using oem only parts?

On my previous bikes, I used to carry with me (under the seat) set of cheapo levers ($5 each), shifter and rear brake pedal.

I sort of doubt the cheap stuff will fit. The levers are somewhat special with the adjusting screw as part of them. There are aftermarket available - but they generally cost ~ $200/set. Ditto on brake/shift levers. There are Chinese rips of the turnsignals available on Ebay (lots cheaper than factory), and I suppose some universal mirrors could be cobbled to fit (my experience with the cheapo universal mirrors was way less than a happy one..)

I try to avoid needing these sort of spares by keeping the bike upright at all times. That goes a long way to longevity for the wear bits. The feeler pegs on the foot-pegs on my bike are still virgin - mostly 'cause I don't lean that far over.. at least not in anger.

Oh - my longest trip so far was about 3,000 miles. Only spare part I carried was an EWS antenna, and that was before mine was replaced by BMW (never had a problem with the original.) On this summers trip (2,300 miles) I meant to toss one of my spare coils in the basement compartment of the tankbag - but forgot all about it. Didn't need it so that's OK too. Left room for the unused suntan lotion SWMBO packs away for me.

Don't "Worry" about the ground down pegs. How expensive could they be? Just save and display the worn ones as trophies of conquest.

hoflix, If you would consider higher pegs, there is at least one option I know about. MFW makes the Vario line of footpegs (Twisted Throttle) that are usually used to lower pegs but their mount allows 360 degrees of rotation of the extension so that the pegs could be higher and rear-set. I don't know what your "expensive" threshold is but I think they are around $200. They are modular so that you can replace just parts - extension and peg stlye - to get the fit you want.

I worn mine down too, though I'm not to the point of needing to replace them.
One thing I can say is that since I switched to Ohlins shocks I don't grind anything anymore... no center stand, no valve covers, nothing. I doubt I'm riding less aggressively, quite the opposite really, but I also haven't been in the Canyons or Deals Gap lately either on my R...
Maybe instead of trying to find numerous replacements or altering your footpegs, investing in some quality suspension could solve your problem, along with really making the bike ride like it's on rails. There's plenty of aftermarket suspension talk around here.
I'm moving to LAin January, but I'm actually already here working, and spent last Sunday riding my 8GS, two-up on a knobby front tire, in the Canyons north of LA up to Oxnard - I could get used to that kind of riding in my backyard, even on the wrong bike!
May be we'll be able to meet up sometime, my R will be here in January.

Mirrors from the R1200ST and the K1200R Sport fit the R. The ST mirrors I describe as a square with rounded corners and the R Sport mirrors are oval or eliptical. Both mirrors are $70.00 each and the clamps and covers cost another $30.00 more. About $180.00 for the mirrors, clamps, and covers (rubber boots I think). I like the ST mirrors.
Someone had used ST mirrors in the F/S section but I snoozed ... $125.00.

Will the ST mirrors fit the clamps on the R???

I was thinking about replacements for the parts that could potentially disable you. Best example i can think of is the clutch lever. Some might argue that u can do without it in an emergency, but it will be tough.

There's gotta be some $5 levers that will fit. non-adjustable, and very fragile, I know. I guess more research is needed. I'll be sure to let everybody know if I find out anything
I mentioned above I found cheap levers for my ex-650gs. Same for my ex-ex-sv650s... brake pedal and shifter for Hayabusas (weird, but for some reason the SV part was a lot more expensive than the hayabusa counterpart, and they fit perfectly)

My "expensive" threshold? uhm.... right now $20?

I never thought about higher pegs. I really like the ergos on my bike. If anything, maybe a tad lower.

But anyways, I have learned to comply, and not try to touch down too often. Instead, I'm concentrating on the technique, on hanging off more and being smooth.

I've seen your pix of the pegs. Mine are not that bad. As far as the suspension...indeed... the stock one is not so great, or at least not to my liking and riding style. I was thinking about fitting a GS suspension (is that more adjustable??) or... the Ohlins but they are so damn expensive!

Where did u go riding? to me, "north of LA" means Malibu (or actually the area between PCH, rte 23, FWY 101 and rte 27 -- I know, I know, it's not really North)... which is actually my favorite bike destination for quick getaways and my (almost) daily dose.
So for sure, if you ever need a riding buddy, let me know.

+1 hoflix, I am with you on this. We are extremely spoiled here.
I know it is a bit further "north" but don't forget to add Camino Cielo, ABOVE and behind Santa Barbara. If you have not tried this tidbit you are in for a nice surprise!

And the views are nice too.... the ocean on one side half a mile below and the mountains on the other. Riding the ridge.

Any idea when ACH will open up again? My recent discovery has been Caliente Bodfish/Creek and Hwy 155. It's a bit of a hike but doable in a day and a whole lot of fun. Just watch out for cows on the road on Caliente Creek

Sure there's good riding in New England, but the snow will fly soon and my R will be hibernating in the great white north of VT.

Sorry hoflix, we missed by a few hours. It was a late afternoon run for me, came from the north (Los Posas Rd) and was at Mugu Rock at about 4:45 PM. Ran a few miles south and turned around at Neptune's Net and headed back through the mountains behind Camarillo. (Was riding solo). Sure we will run into each other sometime.
