Riding to work yesterday morning it was getting a little cooler than I'm used to here in North Central Texas. So I fire up the grip heaters. A few mins later my right hand is burning a bit and my left grip heater is dead Anyone ever heard of this issue or know where to start to look??

Boy this looks like it's gonna be a ton of fun lol.

Diagnosis isn't all that bad:

1. Pull the bar-end weights for visual inspection of the heated grip wire where they enter the grip body.
2. Pull off the gas tank to check continuity of each side of the grip wiring.

The problem is usually found via one of the above. If not, then you have only a couple of other potential issues:

Faulty wiring connecting the heated grip switch;
Faulty switch itself;
Problem with the aux power socket on the same fuse circuit, though that's unlikely in your case as one heated grip works.

Both my grips are now dead. They died separately. The dealer said the grips themselves need to be replaced. Parts for both are about $250 and then add 2.5 hours of labor. Does this sound right?

Never heard of a grip element failing. Almost nothing mentioned about the switch malfunctioning. Heard a LOT about the wires TO the grips failing.

The grip can fail 2 ways that I have seen. A broken wire connecting the grip to the harness, usually caused the zip ties. I have also had a short in the element it self

at this point you have nothing to lose. Pull the grip off the bike and pull on each lead. If there is a broken wire may just slid out. If the leads are good cut the rubber grip off the heating element. The grip is only glued on at the ends. You can use a sharp to carefully cut the glue spots and then peel it off

I found a black spot where the wire had shorted and burned away. I soldered across short to fix
