looking for good R1150R magnetic tank bag/tail bag

Has anyone found either a good magnetic tank bag or strap on "soft" tail bag for the R1150R? Not sure which is the better in the long run. Want enough storage for a small bag of groceries, or a mini cooler for a day trip, or maybe a XL helmet.
Thanks

I had the same magnetic tank bag for 15 years until it finally wore out. When I replaced it a few months ago I went to a half of a dozen dealers to find a replacement. I could not find one tank bag that had enough magnets to keep it stuck to the tank at higher than posted speeds. I based this off of the one that a buddy gave me with the same amount and strength of magnets. What I ended up doing was sewing in all of the magnets from my prior bag. Works great!! It seems like the manufacturers don't want to put in as magnets as really needed. That's nothing funny about having your tan bag fly up and beat you in the chest at 70 mph while being held on by the safety strap.

When I replace this one it will be with one that straps to the tank.

I use a large Oxford Humpback magnetic tank bag. It is expandable and can hold a lot but but would not hold a helmet or much more than a med-small bag of groceries. I'd look for a tail bag or buy the side cases if that's how you plan to use it.

I didn't want huge bags or cases as I don't do long trips, but do often carry a fair bunch of "stuff".

I ended up with the Nelson-Riggs "Silver Streak" standard models, not the higher cost ones with all
the extra striping and other decoration. I'm very happy with them. They fit the bike well, have lots
of handy features, and seem to be well made. The tank bag really clamps on, have never had any
problem with it shifting or loosening even at the occasional 100mph+ blast, although it is behind a
windshield. The tank bag has all kinds of nifty features, little pockets on the sides and top, a see-thru
waterproof map pocket on top, and is expandable. Expanded it'll (just) hold a 12 pack of bottles standing up.

The saddlebags and tank bag were quite reasonably priced. I don't remember where I found them, but
they're easily found with a search. Not everyone carries the "standard" lower priced Silver Eagle versions,
many places try to sell you the higher cost fancier ones. BTW, use Scroogle Scraper instead of Google.
Google tracks all your searches and sells the info to advertisers. Scroogle takes your search & sends it to
Google anonymously, sends the results back to you without Google knowing who sent the request, and then scroogle erases all records of it so NOBODY tracks you. It's a Firefox Add-On, too.

The bags clear my muffler just fine - after I lowered it 1".

Here's Photobucket for the bags http://s719.photobucket.com/albums/ww200/macx351/
There's also an album in there to show how I lowered the muffler. You can't tell it unless you
get right down and eyeball it from a very short distance.

Hi,
I've used a Marsee expandable magnetic tank bag on a previous Honda and since 2003 on the R R.It's really well made (in the U.S.A.) and shows no signs of wear after about 8 years of use.I have it with me almost all the time since I keep my rain gear in it.
Occasionally I use a set of Chase Harper saddle bags from eBay which hold a ton of stuff, are much more waterproof than I thought and fit just fine with the standard exhaust.

SHAMELESS PLUG:
For the tail I have a Eclipse tail pack (used once) which I keep meaning to list on eBay.
It probably fits a full face helmet because it holds my Arai SZa & shield with room to spare. It has a clever adjustable bungee cord in it's base with hooks on the cord which can be hooked onto the rear grab rails.Really well made, reflective strip, shoulder strap, but I just don't carry enough stuff on a regular basis so it is a closet queen.

PM me if you think you could use the Eclipse bag.I 'll try to send a picture, maybe we can work something out.

Ride Safe, Bill

I have a magnetic Nelson Rigg tank bag. It is medium size, and expands a bit if I really need to shove a bunch of crud in it. I have used it for at least 3 years.

I replaced my Nelson Rigg when it started scratching the tank--very slight and able to polish them out.

I went with the SW Moto Engage bag and mount and have never regretted it--you can see it in any pics of my RR.

It will hold a Nikon D200 and zoom lens, glasses, wipes, an ipod and phone in the map pocket. Just very handy and positively will not scratch

Sorry, Re seatpacks look at the MotoFizz from Aerostich--3 sizes and well reviewed. Not to expensive.

If you are just going to bungee something down, check out REI and look for duffels

I've ordered from Aerostich a couple of times amd find the prices pretty much MSRP, but my complaint with them has always been the shipping cost. Rather than charge you $5 to ship a tank bag they will calculate shipping on how much the item cost x how far you live from Duluth. So a 1 oz Motronic upgrade chip costs $17.50 or some such to ship. I usually skip Aerostich for that reason..

GypsyRR has been carrying around a pretty good looking decent sized FirstGear tail bag.

I have never ordered from Aerostich, didn't know that 8(

but the bag looks good and the three sizes are very practical. You can also see a medium one on the back of a R12R in that part of the froum under the pictures thread.

I just use a duffel or soft luggage and rok strap or bungee. I have a tail case pretty much always on for commuting

I've ordered from Aerostich many, many times. I never found the shipping too bad. I'll pay (no pun intended) more attention next time. The one huge benefit I've found with Aerostich is their customer service. These people bend over backwards to make sure you are happy. The other thing is their choice of gear they sell. It's all been tested in the real world.

Now I'm sure others have other opinions, I can only speak from my own experiences.

Went with a Fieldsheer Contour Tank Bag with Magnetic Base for $65 on sale from CompetitionAccessories.com, big bag when expanded and almost half off! Was thinking a tail bag would get in my way every time I got on and off the bike.

Also got a green light trigger HP, will get back after I see how it works.
