Autocom and HiD50's

Does anyone have any (polite) suggestions as to where i can locate an Autocom Super Pro AVI on my rockster? There doesn't look to be much room anywhere under the seat except for the tool tray. I'm hesitating fitting it there as i'd prefer not to lose the tool storage facility. Anyone found anywhere else suitable please?

Also if i may crave your indulgence a little further, my research on the forum seems to suggest that the most convenient power source to tap into is the tail light feed? I'm going to go with that (if i can find it) unless someone knows some place easier?

And the HiD50 reference? I just wish to add that i've replaced the standard bulbs with the HiD50 conversion. Actually i went for the 35W version and i'm well pleased with the result. I can recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it. Lighting is much improved, all the extra gubbins are nicely tucked out of sight and most important - that cool pure white light so looks the business

Another spot to consider mounting the Autocom is on top of the air filter. On Lionlady's Rockster, I added a Blue Seas fuse box to provide power to all her farkles. We moved the diagnostic connector off to the side (that big round one) and removed the bracket for it, then put the fuse box there. It's held in place with a couple of pieces of 3M Dual Lock, so we can move it aside to change the filter when necessary. I'm assuming you have the stock seat - she has a Sargent seat, which has a little storage comparment in the underside. That made clearance for her Autocom under the seat.



Tapping the taillight is one of the simplest ways to get power. I ran power direct to the fuse block from the battery, thru a relay. Then tapped into the taillight to control the relay. That way there's no problem trying to pull a lot of current thru that little tiny taillight wire when the Autocom, GPS, and aux lights are all turned on.

The storage option we've chosen for Autocom and accessory electronics is in a tankbag. Mrs. Sweatmark and I each have Autocom and gizmos crammed into a tankbag on our R1150Rs. Here's a plus/minus for stashing the Autocom and all of its input devices together:

+ easy assembly/disassembly of the gizmos, which for us include GPS, music source (XM radio and/or iPod), bike-to-bike radio, cell phone. All the devices have 12vdc power adapters, and connection to a fused bike power source is either the accessory port by starter or via SAE connector direct from battery.

+ easy removal of gizmos when off the bike and not watching for funny business, e.g. meals, in tent or hotel.

+ allows you to work out electrical details while sitting at the dining table, watching the game on tv and sipping favorite beverage. Most of the time I'd rather work on electrical stuff where it's comfortable, rather than inside a hot garage. Bought myself a 5 amp 12vdc benchtop supply in order to check things out without installing on bikes.

- some folks don't like tankbags

- routing the pillion Autocom lead is cumbersome when comms unit is in tankbag

- tankbag quickly fills up with electronics, leaving no room for other necessities
