3 - Other.. make an adventure out of it. Plan a route that doesn't include slab, or as little slab as possible. By the time you get home it should be pretty much broken in. Backroads, mountains, all good for breaking in your new R12R..

That is what motorcycling is all about.

Is your local dealer not willing to take care of getting the bike moved for you? I'd be a little surprised if not, actually; but then I've been surprised by dealers before. :-/

Preferred method is Don's, however, keep in mind that at 600 miles or thereabouts you need to land at a BMW dealer for the break-in service.

3rd option would be to go get it and trailer it back, but that's not going to save any time over Don's method, in all likelihood.

So, if you have the time, ride it back. If not, have it transshipped to your local dealer.

You can go slab fast and have plenty of fun and still keep the bike within the manufacurers specs. Ride it home and then buy a new seat. (bitter old man who didn't like his stock seat).
Avoid trailering if at all posible. You will think more highly of yourself.

What an opportunity. I would pack some good waterproof gear and make sure "Avoid highways" is checked in Google Map options.

I am a bit concerned about infant mortality, as between San Diego and Tuscon is a LOT of nothing...

Take a day or two riding around "Daygo" and the foothills and then have the first service completed at the shop. Some nice roads off of I-8 in CA and also from Gila Bend down through Why and then across the Reservation back to Tucson. You would be close to a 6K service when you get back home if you work it right.

Excellent advice, I'll make sure to plan the breakdown for early morning

Take a detour up through Phoenix to Prescott and back via Hwy 89. From Congress to Prescott is a real happy road, the last 20 miles into Prescott need to be ridden a couple of times. I took a brand new GS through there in February. See tag-line.
