Has anybody figured out how to get them working like the Harley ones - push once=on push again=off while still retaining the auto cancel facility ?

Unless you're capable of reprogramming the ZFE body module that controls them I think this is a non-starter. Unlike earlier bikes, all this good stuff is done with computer logic, not mechanical relays/switches/etc. I'm sure the controls send out a code when you press LEFT a different code when you press RIGHT, and yet a third code when you press CANCEL.

I had the Kisan module on my R1150RS that did make the buttons do this like a Harley, but in actual use - it became confusing since the normal cancel button was still there, and the use of it was pretty much ingrained in me from years of BMW riding.

I'd suggest just living with it as it is - after 10-15 years and a few hundred thousand miles it will become almost second nature..

Since it's a computer (quite possibly programmed in Java), wouldn't it be simple for BMW to add the code

"If R-TURNSIGNAL pulse detected,
if R-RSIGNAL == TRUE, Then set R-SIGNAL = FALSE
Else set R-SIGNAL= TRUE"?

In addition to making things simpler, the cancel switch could then be used for something else, like driving lights.

I can absolutely promise you - it's not in Java..

It would certainly be simple - but lots of things would be simple for BMW to add/modify and it's never happened. I liked my idea of a backdoor PIN# code for overriding the EWS system, and I even made certain the idea got to BMW - it hasn't happened..
