BestConfig ? for HIDForkLights + HIDHiBeam & Modulator.

Post by thepeacebullgrunt »

Hi !

So ! finally what is the best choice ?

I am very certainly going to buy 2 spot auxiliary light from Trailtech.
Also plan to HID convert my headlight with futurevisionhid and a Kissan modulator.

Actually reading previous topics about it on this forum and I still wonder what the best way to go

What brand and specific model are the best to buy ?
(Feel free to post exact Links)

My requirements are:
1) Easy Installation
2) Safety for the bike electrical system
3) Excellent overall reliability and functionality if installed with the trailtech auxiliary lights.

What's the best association with the Trailtech's auxiliary light
for freeway and city riding ?

This is funny too Tr250Tom and I read the previous post about it.... even if I found your "thistopichasbeencovered" post a little rude in its intention.

Not everybody on this forum has the same technical level (In addition to that I can't even understand finely English)

Realize that It is not that simple or easy...I read the previous topics about HID and I can see that there is issues, installation ISSUES, electrical issues on association with Kissan modulator, heat, headlamp reflector, different colors than the auxiliary light I might choose and all kind of technical craps that do not make the choice easy at the end. (I am not a mechanic...I just want to buy the right set up, the one that there is no problems or risk with it, then ask someone with the expertise to install it properly in order to Use it everyday)

This is why I was asking some kind of updated and precise information's... a simple list with priority on 1) Easy Installation --> 2) Safety for the bike electrical system
--> 3) Excellent overall reliability and functionality if installed with the Trailtech auxiliary lights.

I just called futurvisionhid.com and they recommend to just HID convert the Low beam with the H11 then pick a Silvana or PIAA strong high beam bulb to blink with the Kissan modulator .

I repeat I am not savvy in this domain so the futurvisionhid.com told me to eventually plug the HID directly to the battery in order do not take too much power from the electrical system in the first 30 secondes...or something like that... barely even understood what he meant

BUT anyway ! Skeptical by nature :)
I was just wondering if there was a better set up to install with the Trailtech auxiliary lights.
Hence this "Headlight HID Conversion & Modulator." Topic

That's it ! ;) just need precise, accurate and optimum informations to complete my lightning shopping list before I get to the installation steps

Okay, kinda mean, but I really did laugh alot.

HID low beam conversion: I think this is a good idea & I can't see any reason not to do it.

High beam conversion to aftermarket halogen bulb: I would be concerned about bulb life. I used the bright Sylvania halogen bulbs in my car and they did not last a year.

FutureVisionHID idea for connection: Bruno knows his stuff but you don't care since you are going to rely on profession installation.

HID cannot be modulated, CANBUS doesn't like low beam modulation, modulate high beam for superior daytime conspicuity if you don't need super-bright high beams (HID) at night.

Power draw is a relative non-issue if you're not using heated clothing so examine the halogen driving light options not just HID.

Maybe Don knows this one: Can most lights be mounted in the sideways orientation that the Lumalink brake caliper mount version requires?

That is what we have discussions like this for. Your English is doing fine, so please do not worry about that!

FredeR1200Ric wrote:I just called futurvisionhid.com and they recommend to just HID convert the Low beam with the H11 then pick a Silvana or PIAA strong high beam bulb to blink with the Kissan modulator .
The reason he suggested that is because the HID lamps have a start-up time to light that makes a modulator impractical on the high beam. Most modulators are designed to use the high-beam. The CANBUS system on the R1200R requires some special electronics in the modulator to avoid having the computer flash a bulb warning in sync with the modulator. There is actually no reason that you could not elect to modulate the low beam except that you would have to rewire the standard setup (using the high beam) into the low beam wiring. The high beam is a better choice because the lamp is aimed higher and is much brighter at a distance as a result.

The suggestion to wire to the battery is for several reasons. First, the CANBUS electronics are designed to shut down circuits that are drawing too much electrical current, and the simple way to avoid that situation is to wire accessory items directly to the battery with proper fuses in place. Most of us wire a relay into the CANBUS system to automatically turn on the accessory circuit with the key, which also avoids the possibility of draining your battery if something is left on. Secondly, the HID lamps have some electronics in the ballast that must generate a high current high voltage starting pulse to energize the gasses in the bulb to light the lamps. This current is a large peak draw for a few seconds until the lamps light that would cause the CANBUS to shut off the circuit.

Again, this is why this kind of forum exists. Someone here has probably installed most any combination of any accessory that you can think of, so questions are always welcome. Everybody here started out as a novice at some point and probably asked the same questions someone did before. Hopefully a little tolerance will prevail and answers will be given again, even if they repeat previous questions and answers. We can even point to some of the prior answers which contain photos!

Depends on the light.

The TrailTech HID reflector/bulb assemblies have no orientation - so they can mount at any angle (they basically put out a round cone of light.) Lights such as the Hella FF50's do have an orientation, and need something like the split-clamp bracket to mount in a useable direction. Any bulb with a built in reflector is typically OK for non-orientation specific use. Any light with a non-round reflector usually has an orientation it should be mounted in.

What happen if you install two 36 degree floods
but force their aiming inside the headlight pattern in a way that it will
maybe remain 5, 8 or 10 degree on the side ?

In order to limit the blinding effect but still use HID flood lights as HID fog lights in city's Is someone tried to design some kind of transparent neutral density filter hood for lightning such as the trailtech, neutral density filter hoods similar to what is used in cinema industry ?

TrailTech has semi-transparent covers for their HID lights that can be left on when the lights are operating. I couldn't imagine why one would want to do this - but you just posited a reason to...

Thanks Don for this quick follow up but I was not thinking "Filter"..meaning full filtering like in photography but more like just a side hood... which can be designed to act and not fully block the light on the external side of the beam then just tape it with photographic gaffer on the lamp body or even those cover you mentioned.

Just Idea's... but I still wonder if I should just go for your halogen Hella FF50 solution with Lumalink brackets.

Frederic:

I think you are overthinking this problem. If you are concerned about having running lights, then HID is an expensive way to do that. Get some regular driving lamps at Walmart.

If you want to be really seen, go with the HID lamps. It is your choice as to spot or flood lamps, but if you intend to use them at night, the spots work better. The floods can be used and seen quite well, however they are too wide for use as a driving lamp beyond about 75 feet based on what I have seen. The spots are easily useful at half a mile and beyond. In daylight, EVERYBODY looks hard at what is approaching with my high beam modulator and the HID's on.

I know Doug... :smt017 .... I think a lot about it, but this week I probably ordered up to $3000 of accessories...and still slightly undecided with the lights. So ! you might understand why I do not want any selective mistake being done.

All I want is to select the perfect choice then install it, use it...and never have to think about it anymore... meaning thinking about something else, jump to something else...do other stuff with my motorcycle... USE THE EQUIPMENTS !

I know what you mean about spending the money. The cost of the motorcycle is only the down payment on the accessories !

My friends tell others that before I buy tires I will know the name of the farmer who planted the rubber trees the tire was made from. Same thing with other stuff !

There is no "perfect" anything. There are always trade-off's. Look at how many of us have purchased 4 or 5 windscreens to find the "perfect" one. I still have three screens besides the tall CalSci I usually ride with. I change them when the temperature gets hot or cold as necessary, but none of them are perfect for all situations.

At some point you have to jump into the water and swim. Come on in... the water is fine :D

Hi ka5ysy !

I understand that "perfection" cannot be found in all solutions but... asking questions, debating, turning around the problematics prior to rush on fancy solutions can help to approach perfect and genuine alternatives.
And you might have noticed that I reserved the windshield part for the dessert ! :smt031
Because I can imagine how this one can be subjective and tedious to resolve...if just impossible

I am not a big fan of windshields anyway... I bought the R1200R after a disappointment at test riding the 1200RT... all those fairings and this huge windshield in my eye sight just completely freaked me out and I was really disapointed.
What I really like on a motorcycle is precisely to feel the air going on me at all time...being under heavy rain at night with no fairing at all but just good waterproof rain gears is my ultimate pleasure, and I even really like that certain type of deep physical exhaustion you can feel while resting in a sofa after a 5 or 6 hours ride.

So I'll take my time with the windshield....
but I do want to select the best accessories and discuss about it.

And by the way ....in term of "Best Config" what about this for the low beams http://www.futurevisionhid.com/xp-h11-m ... -p-68.html and this one for this converted HID Hella's http://www.hid50.com/ mounted on the calipers with a Lumalink T-link ----> here : http://www.lumalink.com/T-Link_bracket.html
