It is time to replace the original shocks on my 04 R1150R ABS. I have 52K miles. Can anyone give me a clue as to what this will cost me.

West Monroe - that's paper mill country, isn't it? I've got close ties to the industry.

Shocks: good question, especiialy with fluctuations in value of the US dollar. Some folks here have moved to Ohlins following the demise of their OE shocks, while others have shopped for used-but-good OE take-offs. Last option would be either replacement OE units, or another aftermarket source - which are limited.

If you find a good aftermarket option that hasn't yet been discussed on the board, please share the wealth.

The cost of suspension work is shocking! (Sorry)

I replaced my rear at 23K with an Ohlin and did not regret it. It was a while ago but I think you should be prepared for the $600 range for a fully adjustable shock from them. The front recently was replaced by my long-time friend at Cogent Dynamics. He tried to use the stock spring but it wouldn't work with aftermarket parts, so he used an Ohlin spring. It is a one-off for now but he would do another for the right price; which, unfortunately would be about what an Ohlin would cost. It is a better shock though! I now have full adjustability - front and rear and the handling is back to the solid feel I remember when it was newer!

There are cheaper options out there like Wilbers and Works Performance? but I have no experience with them.

Drew, I went on thew cheap and found a set for the RT I had in AR. $200 shipped. They had 10k on them but a big upgrade from originals which had over 50k. Aftermarket shocks are great but come at a great price.

I have absolutely not affiliation with the cat selling this--just noticed it for sale over at Advrider.com.

Sure do appreciate all the responses. I knew I'd better sit down before I wrote the check. Will look at several options but there is no doubt they need to be replaced. Hey, had to spend my tax return on something !! Thanks again to all.

I thought Ohlins wasn't making shocks for our 1150R's any more. The US web site doesn't list them, says something about "unavailable" IIRC. Works Performance does have shocks listed.

Drew, what tax refund are you talking about, didn't you hear, we are getting IOU's.

If you're looking at Ohlins and are having a tough time finding them, call or email Mitch at http://www.mitchsmotorcycles.com. He has just moved to (set up shop in) Boise. I have talked to him regarding maintenance on my bike and he seems like a really nice guy. Last conversation I had with him, he mentioned that he still has Ohlins available for the 1150r and rockster, as well as OEM shocks.

Where I come from, Wilburs are giving Ohlins a serious run for the money. Cheaper than Ohlins, and springs are personally set-up for the weight specified.

My mate has them on his K1100RS and Guzzi Jackal, very very happy

You can also check out YSS and HyperPro. No experience with them, just noting. Penske also makes motorcycle shocks, but I think they're really pricey.

I have about 8000 miles on my front worksperformance. Kept the stocker on the back.

I also heard that Ohlins wasnt making shocks anymore for the R1150R and Rockster, so I had my dealer order and install a set of Ohlins while the bike is in storage for the winter... I was going to put them on eventually, but when I heard they were discontinued I jumped on it. I havent had a chance to try them yet (winters are long here in canada!) but from what Ive heard they will be great. and they were a little pricey too, but you get what you pay for IMO.

and if anyone wants my stock front and rear shock (13k kilometres from a 2006 R1150R) please PM me and make an offer!

I did. And so did BiffsR I believe...Maybe others. I wouldn't count on getting one from them now. They were dismantling the rear ends of brand new R1150Rs to build trike type of bikes for paraplegics. But you can still check. They may still have some left over.

I have a rear shock from Martin Conquest, and it was a huge improvement over the original with 30k miles on it. It was one hell of a deal.

Another vote for Ohlins.
Pricey but well worth the cost. You will feel like you have a new bike.

I just had the shop put Ohlins on my R...so I guess they are available out there somewhere.

It has been so cold that I have yet to ride them...
