I have owned a rockster for about 6 months, having read a few of the forums i decided to remove the catalitic convertor and replace it with a straight Y piece. Whilst this left me with a marginal improvement in acceleration it did leave me with a GREAT BIG popping on the exhaust when i shut the throttle off. Good fun for 2-3wks then gets annoying! So i hunted around and found a great Canadian site where i could get a power commander for half the UK sales price thanks to the then strong £/$ exchange. I spent a couple of hours fitting this to the bike and WOW what a difference.
The bike now starts with a single flick of the starter rather than cranking it untill you think the battery will die, it runs like a silk glove over skin and i only get that backfire if i shut off suddenly after opening her up hard (still running the commander on the out of the box settings not had it Dyno'd yet).
Just thought i would share this, in my view, well worthwhile afternoons worth of tinkering to get a much sweeter bike.

And if you are happy with the end result now, you should be even happier after performing an idle and TB sync as this really affects the operation of the boxer engine.

The poping will be reduced but will never dissapear due to the fact that when you close the throttle the injectors stop firing and the mixture leans out for a couple of cylinder fires, hence the poping. Poping is also a result of leaking exhaust connections as it will allow oxygen into the exhaust and lean the cylinder mixture as well.

You are on the right track......

The popping could be from exhaust leak at the Y-pipe, or it could be that the fuel/air ratio needs to be adjusted (most of the time it's the latter). Have your bike taken to a shop that has a gas analyzer for the exhaust and adjust the fuel/air ratio until the popping goes away. Mine was like that until my buddy did his magic. I also have the PCIII but that didn't cure the popping. Nor did it help with the easier start-up. It does help with the power delivery though.

the only "must-do" mod i can think of is to swap the stock exhaust can to something that makes it sound more like a motorcycle.
everything else is up to you.

I installed a new BOS exhaust, together with a Y-pipe.
The good thing for this is: If you order this together, they add a reprogrammed EPROM chip as well, which gets rid of the "backfire"

There are some good resellers via the internet that can ship you this set for under 750 EURO (example: http://www.ks-parts.de/), the BMW dealer wanted 950 EURO for it !!
