San diego Trip report

Post by mkmd555 »

I had to attend a conference in San Diego for 5 days this week. The sessions end around noon, so there was time on hand. I am not the one for fancy dining or chit chat with friends so I had decided earlier to rent a bike. The bike in my mind was of course a BMW.
However, on searching the web I came across Harleys. Since I had never ridden one, the idea of renting a Harley became enticing. So far I had heard mostly negative things about the HD.
I took the free Alamo shuttle to the Alamo rental office, and walked two blocks to SandiegoHaley.com on 2400 Kettner. 619 233 6677.

The friendly salesman Joe showed me the bikes and I settled for the ‘08 FatBob. A free helmet was also provided. The daily rate was a low price of 59.00. BMW bikes go for 185.00/day.
I rode the Fatbob for around 40 miles but the footpegs and the gear lever were awkwardly placed, which tired my legs. So I took a chance and went back to Joe hoping for a swap. I was expecting to pay extra,at least for the fuel. Joe surprised me and gave a 08 Road King with bags, and a windshield. The bike had around 900 miles and was new. When I offered him to charge me, he just looked up waiving, which said, Don’t worry about it

The Road King was a bit difficult to handle in the city but once on the Harbor drive it was a star. The sound, the ride and the torque were amazing. I fell in love with the Road King. With a thrill in my heart which, I had not felt in months, I found myself heading on I-5 North. The bike easily reached 90 with plenty to spare. The ride was smooth and the mirrors were clear.
The day was made for riding, sunny and 70 with clear skies and blue ocean on my left. I headed to Carlsbad for a snack and fill up. The parking lot of the coffee shop was fragrant with baking bread.

The road king has good controls. I especially liked the remaining miles feature on the trip computer. The bike also has self cancelling turn signals. The sound and the presence of the bike force others to respect you.In the city as I got used to ride, the ride was not bad. I loved the shakes the bike gives you when idling. The shakes disappear once you shift to the second.

I would attend the conference mostly thinking of the bike. I had initially planned to ride for a day but kept the bike for 3 days. I would call Joe every evening to extend the lease. I will fully recommend the dealer and if your plans take you to San Diego, think of the Harley. I am going home with cherished memories.

They don’t call it a Harley for nothing. It is a true American Icon and so original.
