Won't Start In Gear

Post by ShinySideUp »

Side stand up. In first gear. Clutch pulled in. No start.

Shift to neutral. Starts right up.

Anybody know why, before I take it in to the dealer?

Shifting to neuitral takes two sensors out of the equation:
- side stand
- clutch

If it's the side stand sensor, it should still start in neutral with side stand down or up. Then (if it's like my F650) it should still cut out if you pull in clutch and put it into gear with the stand UP. Good news is the sides stand sensor is usually easy to clean / align (but I dunno where it is on the R12R). My F650 one got clogged with fine muck (I think) and even though I couldn't see it very well, a stiff brush with soapy water soon sorted it out.

If it's the clutch, logic says should be able to start with side stand down in neutral, and then it will cut out as you put it into gear with the side stand still down (ie the side stand sensor is still working) because the clutch sensor only operates to prevent starting in gear, unlike the side stand sensor which should operate all the time ..

I've never needed to fix the clutch sensor ...

Thanks, guys, looks like I'll be visiting my dealer and pointing at the clutch switch.

Funny, but the weather has been warm and very dry this week, not the usual summer fog and I haven't washed the bike in a while. It's not logical... it's German :)
