Why Can't I connect to iTunes?

Post by GypsyRR »

I'm trying to desperately restore my iPhone to fully function, and I cannot connect to iTunes to download the new iPhone updated software. For 2 days now I keep getting this message:

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. And unknown error occurred. (-2096) Make sure your network connection and try again."

I'm connected to the internet, but cannot connect to iTunes. What's my next step?

On a Leopard installed MAC...

Insure you have the current Leopard 10.5.4

Insure you have the current iTunes update: 7.7 If not, download and install 7.7.

Insure you have the current version of Quicktime 7.5 Reinstall it no matter what.

Insure your firewall is set to permit input/output from iTunes.

Insure your ISP has not changed any settings on your connection, Insure your laptop is set to its default settings.... you've been traveling, who knows what settings are changed?

Check Apple support and chat with an expert.

From the Apple support forum:

"in a terminal window, issue the following command:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

you'll need an admin password for it. "

I'm synced with my desktop. Never plugged iPhone into laptop. I have not changed my ISP settings on my desktop. Would they change on their own? That is way over my head if I have to check ISP settings.

ugh.

Looked at that, and I don't think it is applying to my situation. I couldn't find my answer there.

You lost me at 'in a terminal window', but I'm looking at the link to see if I can figure it out. I don't know computer speak though, so I may get lost in that stuff. Would the folks at att be able to fix this for me if the link you gave me is beyond my comprehension? Can't they just get things working right again if I took the phone to them?

Yes.

We have this problem often at work, and simply plugging the iPhone into another PC/MAC (with iTunes installed) usually fixes it... dont ask me why, and I am an IT guy... :-k
