Bike Down, Broken Grip Heater?

My son is in Colorado on my 02 R1150R, and a couple of weeks ago he dropped the bike on a dirt-road mountain pass. I haven't seen it yet but he assures me that he's OK and the damage is minor. But the left bar-end weight is busted (I have a Throttlemeister) and the left grip heater is not working. He and his uncle looked for a broken wire but could not find one. I'm suspecting that the heater unit itself is broken, but I don't know what they look like and what would break. Does anyone have experience with these? Any ideas?
I wouldn't really care all that much but I need to sell the bike
when he brings it back in a few weeks.
