Hi all,

I'm new to BMW's and am riding a '08 R1200R. While I mostly love the bike the dealer isn't at the top of my preferred list. They gave me a bad experience with the brake recall (didn't bleed the brakes properly) and the fuel gage stopped working the next day (they saud those fail all the time and that BMW has a "stop ship" on the parts until they figure it out, I didn't believe them. I haven't had a chance to remove the tank and check the connection yet).

As such I fould a different dealer that has been good to deal with but is 6 hours away. I ordered a new EWS in case I had a road side failure. We talk about me changing the EWS ring myself, not sure if anyone here has done that. Any one?? Your input would be appriciated.

I can promise you no one has done it on an R12R. What has been talked about (and AFAIK - no one has done it) is an emergency hookup of the spare one (leaving the original one in place) to get you to someplace where the dealer can do the job.

Looked as if:

- Replacing it is big time job due to the one-time-anti-theft screws that hold the lock in place. These have to be drilled and then an easy-out used to remove them. To drill them out the steering head has to come off so a drill can get to the screws. This involves removing the front light assembly and the bars, plus 3 nuts that hold the top steering head plate in place. At least a 2 hour job by a mechanic with all the tools who has done it before.

- You could disconnect the old ring, and hook the new ring up to get it near the key so you can start the bike by removing the headlight/instrument assembly. This is removed with 4 bolts - you drop it down on the front fender, which gives you access to the cover over the ring connector. Disconnect wiring from the bad ring, hook it up to your spare, put in the vicinity of a key and start the bike. It may be doable with the torx keys that came with the bike (not 100% sure - haven't looked..)

I'd get it to the "other" dealer - make an overnight adventure out of it..

Nothing you said sounds too difficult, plus gives me the chance to buy that drill press I always wanted but never had the "need". Your other suggestion, making an over nighter out of it, sounds like a good change to put on some miles too. Hummm, which way to go.

As you stated I'll have it for that emergency failure, not sure if I'll rework it myself or not.
