hi all......i'd like to get some info. about the chargers to keep the battery happy when the bike is idle for a few weeks/month.
so, what charger can you recommend and what do you like about it and also important what you DON'T like about it.

i realize that there are a few topic's on this already....but I wanted to hear about the latest and the greatest:-)

please mention the brand, site link, price, etc....this should only include chargers that will charge the battery in R12R (gell type?)

From what I can find on the web, the BMW chargers are going to be pretty expensive.

I can tell you from personal experience, though, that the bike's battery will last for at least two weeks between riding, with no problems.

the problem that i heard about BMW chargers is that they do not trickle charge since the charger turns itself off when the battery if fully charged.......something to do with CANbus if I am not mistaken.......

When I bought mine I asked about using the the BMW power port charger adapter for the "battery tender" brand. Worked great on my K12RS but the dealer advised that you have to connect it directly to the battery posts of the R1200 using the supplied cord and hide the hookup lead when not in use. Seems to work fine. Not sure of the reason but someone mentioned CANBUS?

I have used this Deltran Motorcycle Car Maintain Battery Tender Jr with great results for 2 years on my BMW's. Safe for Gel batteries, says the manufacturer.
Here is the battery tender charger plug wired directly to the battery, with an inline fuse. It also doubles as an outlet to plug my Slime air pump in...
It's my understanding that some people have had problems trying to charge through the accessory outlet from the CANBUS system.

I really like the Kisan on-board charger. It's about the size of a pack of chewing gum. Anywhere I can get an extension cord, I can charge the bike.

Upon coming home, I turn the engine off with the kill switch. This reminds me that I'm plugged in before driving off in the morning!

The charger's supposed to be Very Intelligent, sensing what type of battery it's connected to and adjusting it's charging/trickle profile accordingly.

What is this "battery charger" thing I'm seeing reference to? Is this some sort of farkle I've missed?

I find just riding it regularly seems to keep the battery charged just fine...

That's the best way, but during the winter months I like to hook up the battery charger when I won't ride the bike for a couple of weeks.
I thinks that how I got 4 and 6 years out of my last two OEM Harley batteries (they may still be in operation, but I don't know since I sold the bikes).

I use a $18 charger with pigtales to the battery I bought at Walmart. Works great. I charge the battery once a week in the winter. Dont trust the amp damper feature on most two or three stage chargers. As long as you keep the volts above 12.6 or so you wont sulfate the battery. I have a couple of fancy chargers with equalization capability but I use these on my marine batteries.
