-Light it and let the flames heat the stove and alcohol for a few seconds
-Set your pot of water on it to boil

Needs a wind screen to be practical outdoors.

Brian, Did you time it to see how long it took to boil the water? And, if so, how much water was in the pot?

This looks really cool, but it all depends on how hot it gets. Do some more tests....Maybe try some grease..animal fat. That stuff burns real good in a skillet left heating. Of course you have to get the grease super hot before it ignites. And gasoline is obviously too combustible.

I'm assuming you got the plan for this from a camper's source, and they probably already have the best fuel for this kind of stove. Let's try it out at HM!

Whippersnapper gets up early enough to hold his own, besides I like hot chocolate on those frosty mornings. It's your tiny bladders and afternoon naps that make you old geezers get up so early.

I appreciate your concern, but the kitchen was safe, those are 6" flames well out from under the microwave. The board you see is the masonite type backing from a clip board, I have plans for it. If a man can't start a fire on the stove in his kitchen where can he? Outside, I know!!!

Can't take credit for this, I've read about them online for a while. There are plans and templates for hole patterns and even pre-made stoves to be had online. Just thought I'd give it a try.

Boxer, I timed a couple of stoves this evening. I never actually got a rapid boil on 2 cups (16oz) of pretty cold tap water. At about 5 to 5.5 minutes you can hear the beginnings of the boil (covered pot). 1/2 oz of fuel in one stove burned out at just over 6 minutes. Another with more than 1/2 oz went to 7 minutes. The last 30 seconds or so the flames really die down killing my chances of hitting a rapid boil. More fuel? Different jet pattern? I'll have to experiment more. Water was definitely boiling and would be plenty hot to make a drink or rehydrate a meal. Not bad for 1/2oz of fuel.

The little pop can stoves made w/ a top and bottom create a pressurized fuel vapor that shoots out the jets. They are undoubtedly more efficient.

I have a real stove and have made hot chocolate in mornings with the geezers. This is just for fun.

You didn't say, but I presume you used dolphin safe tuna?

I have a left over gallon of model airplane fuel. It's pretty old but I may have to experiment with that stuff and see how well it burns. It's (or was) 10% nitromethane, probably 70 to 80% alcohol and the balance castor oil. I love the smell of R/C airplanes running!

I like these homemade and lightweight stove ideas.

Is there a way you could use a deeper/larger diameter can to extend the burn time?
Maybe something like an old Dinty Moore can or along that size.
Might help heating larger items and then you could put a smaller can of whatever you wanted to bring inside the DM can (save a little space).

How about an old 39 oz. coffee can with 12 oz of fuel.

That sounds good for feeding a platoon.
