Did some mods over the weekend

I did some mods over the past weekend, chopped the rear fender, replaced the fugly rear reflectors with some reflective 3M tape and added a Remus can and y-pipe.

The mods went well overall. Chopping the rear fender was very simple and turned out awesome! It's always a little nerve racking taking a saw to your bike.. however. The exhaust install was very simple as well, 25 minutes and it was done. After I got the exhaust installed, that where thing went downhill.

What's the first thing you want to do when you install an exhaust system? Well of course it'd be nice to hear what it sounds like and take it for a spin. After wiping off all the finger prints, I fired the bike up and it idled for a few seconds an died...no biggy I though, it's been 4 months since it's been run. I tried to restart the bike and that's when I realized the 'ol battery was giving up. I was finally able to get it started over the weekend and take a short (wanted to stay close to home in case it died) ride to try out the new mods. Overall I am very happy with the Remus system as far as the exhaust note goes. Chopping the rear fender gives the bike a more aggresive look and I've had 3-4 people ask me about the rear tire already, wondering if I put a larger rear tire on...and I said nope, but I chopped the fender so you can see it now!

I just placed an order for an Odyssey battery and the CP clips so hopefully it'll be here this weekend so I can get it installed! I've got a tripped planned to go out to NC and hit the tail of the dragon, Blueridge Parkway and the Cherahola Skyway in May...I can't wait! This will be the 1st trip out there on my RR.

Pictures of the exhaust and rear fender to come....

Its a funny thing that... chopping the fender... which by the way is called a mudguard in Australia. 8)

Still not sure about the concept of making a roadster trying to look like a sportster. :?

If you want a sportster you buy one, as well...

If you chop the rear fender/mudguard/plastic thingy do you get wetter if you ride on a wet road? Does the "rooster tail" of water hit you in the back?

That has been my experience with mountain bikes, which have no fenders.

rdsmith3 - I've yet to have it in the rain...actually I've barely gotten to ride it since I made the mods because I'm waiting on the new battery (which I found out is back ordered until April 30th). I'm assuming it's gonig to have a bit more rooster tail however i didn't chop the fender completely off...I basically took it off right under the license plate.

I did the same thing to my Katana when I had it without any ill effects in the wet. If I wanted to ride in the dirt and mud, I would have bought a GS and if I'm riding in the rain I'll have my suit on so regardless if it throws a bit more water, I'll be covered.

I should have pictures up tomorrow after work.

rdsmith - I did the fender chopping mod. I have not noticed that I get wetter. I have had reports that anyone following close behind might get sprayed however!

I did the chop for a couple of reasons. Besides looks, it makes rear tire removal easier!

We have some direct comparison experience with the R1150R fender/mudguard chop: Mrs. Sweatmark chopped her Roadster's fender, while my Rockster's "water-spray-control-device" is intact. We live in rainy Oregon. Yes, there's much more spray & roostertail with the chop, but it's not a deal-killer. I just don't follow too closely when her competitive zeal puts the Roadster in the lead.

I finally got some pictures of the mods. I've been crazy busy with work the past couple weeks. The weather's been pretty bad the last week or so. We had light snow showers again this morning! It's crazy, last weekend we had 65 degrees and sun!

I'm happy with the way things turned out, I got the new battery installed last night, just gotta wait for the weather to turn, the forecast for this week looks pretty good, hopefully we'll be done with the snow.
