I'm going to ask again...
...can someone please explain to me how you can tell which gear you're in by comparing the rpm and speed indications? There's a wide band of speed/rpm variation for each gear and I simply can't get the hang of it!

Re: I'm going to ask again...
I guess it's more of a "feel" thing to me. I can't say I always know what gear I'm in other than 6th. It tachs about half of the speedometer----70mph=3500 rpm+/-.
I don't worry about it. I know when I need a lower gear and I just shift for it.

Re: I'm going to ask again...
Yeah, me too. I usually don't consciously care what gear I'm in if it feels right. I get out of first gear real fast, and 6th is like Wayne said, if I'm going 80 and the tach says 4K I know I'm in 6th gear, but the others it's just a matter of feel. If it ever begins to lug, even just a little, I know I'm too high.

Same here. On the highway, it can be tough to tell, but I know that 80 mph is about 4,000 rpm in 6th.Boxer wrote:Yeah, me too. I usually don't consciously care what gear I'm in if it feels right. I try to stay in the 3,500 to 4,500 or 5,000 rpm range. If it is below 3,000 it feels like it is lugging. If it is above 5,000 it can be buzzy.

Re: I'm going to ask again...
Some months back, I posted my way of telling where I am in the gearbox.
In 4th gear the tach and speedo needles match; that is, they are in the same position on the dials. In third, the tach reads a bit higher than the speedo. In fifth, the tach is a bit lower than the speedo. So, there you have the middle three gears, the ones you're most likely to get "lost" in. I can now tell at a glance exactly where I am.
Good luck.

If it appears smooth i'm in a good gear (not necessarily the right one!), if it lugs i'm too high so tap down.. if it gets buzzy its a tap up
My rides are continually up and down the box anyway..... not that many roads about here where you can get lost in a 'box..

Samiam, that's what I was looking for - thanks very much! Can't wait to try it out this weekendSamiam wrote:Some months back, I posted my way of telling where I am in the gearbox.

Glad to repost that. It's one of the first things I learned after I bought the Roadster.
