Tall windscreen, R1150R vs. R1200R

I am thinking of trading from my 2002 R1150R Rockster to a 2008 R1200R. My current bike has the BMW accessory tall windscreen which works well for me. The pictures of the newer model seem to show a smaller, shorter "tall" windscreen from BMW. Has anyone made this trade who can tell me if there is any appreciable difference in coverage between the older and new "tall" BMW windscreen?
Also, I have not been able to find an R1200R to ride, but my business partner has an R1200RT, which I have ridden. Not exact, but better than nothing. For those who have made the switch, is the new model noticeably lighter in weight? Any riding impressions comparing the two would be appreciated. My bike rides real well and I have been very happy with it. It is the latest is a long line of beemers going all the way back to 1969.
Thanks,
Bill

hi bill,
i won't be able to give you any comparisons regarding different BMWs since this the r1200r is my first. however, as far as difference in shields, it depends on your height, seat choice and inseam as well as whether you have a raiser/bar-back installed or not. if you do a search on screens, you should be able to find a blog by a poster here. he has gone through them all. reading his blog should give you an idea of what wind protection each screen offers.
i my self has a bwm tall right now. it is a good 3 season screen for me at 5.9 with 31 inseam bar-back installed on standard seat. i get wind noise but no buffeting. it gets cold with it when the temp is under 35F. i get winds at my arms shoulders high chest and up. so, decent blockage. if i need to slab it for long distance, i would want a 20 CB. but, for 95% of my riding, this is almost perfect.

I have an R12RT and an R12R. The CG of the R bike is much lower and the bike feels much lighter. The R is more responsive in all modes, handling, acceleration, braking, etc. I shouldn't have bought it, but I'm a test ride "victim." It's the most incredible motorcycle I've ever ridden. I did test ride an R1150R, too - the 12 is more comfortable, in addition to the above comments. It's smoother than either of the other two bikes, too. The R12R did feel much better than the 1150 in weight, too.
I have the "touring" screen from BMW on mine. It's pretty pricey, but works better than I'd expected. It is very well made and mounted. I've not yet tried the Z-tecknik yet, but the local guys say good things about. Many comments about various screens are all over the forum....
all the best,
Mike

Bill,
I have an R1200R with the "tall" BMW screen. My whole upper body is in the wind stream with it. There is no buffeting however, very smooth air. I am going to get a 5" over that is a little wider too. Even though the BMW screen works well from an airflow perspective, I want more wind protection.
Hank.

I have just ordered a Ztechnik screen from a dealer in London (
http://www.ztechnik.co.uk). Really nice fellow and he knew his stuff...
The R12R's over here in Israel are Euro spec, so i ordered Ztechnik model Z2408. Anyone ordering in the states - make sure you get the correct model for your bikes (Z2405)
Here is a pic:
Full review to come in a few weeks...

Are you certain it wasn't a photo of the "sport" screen? AFAIK - BMW only has the two available - and they use different mounts. The hot setup for me at the moment is the BMW touring screen mount, and 3 different height Cee-Bailey screens. My winter one is on right now (20" high).. I can change them in about 5 minutes or less (most of the time taken looking for my Torx driver) - so I swap them around with the changes in season.

Just ride one. Take a checkbook. The bike is nimble, powerful, light and smooth. Brakes are about the best BMW has ever made, and some of us (at least a few) even find the stock seat tolerable. You will find the engine amazingly smoother than the 1150 engine, due to better engine management and the balance shaft.
I think most of us here are in agreement - it's the best damn bike BMW has ever made.. and that's saying something.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I ordered the following genuine BMW accessories with the new bike yesterday: saddlebags, tall screen, ABS, heated grips, center stand, top case, tank bag, computer. This kit is similar to my current bike except for the top case, which is required because it is currently the only way to get a backrest for my wife on the R12R. On the Rockster a simple backrest was available from the after-market.
A custom saddle from Bill Mayer will round out the package.
Regards,
Bill
