Took a ride today.....a little rambling.

Post by TonyT607 »

The R1200ST has been on the Tender in my garage for the last couple of weeks since I have not done much riding what with end of year at work, weather, Xmas stuff, etc...so yesterday I try to start the sucker and.....no joy ! Tender has a green light but all I get is tickng. Damn ! 1.5 year old battery has bitten the dust. I shoot down to Cross Country BMW in Metuchen NJ and Brian the Svc Mgr swaps me a new one. Cool. I go home, drop it in, and voila. We have ignition.

It was about 1pm. 47 F and sunny. I had the day off. Wife and daughter are in NYC at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Time to RIDE !

I head out of town and the next thing you know I'm on the NJ Turnpike heading into Manhattan to catch the bike show at the Javits center. I was already planning on going Sunday with sjbmw (Herb) but I thought what the hell, why not also go today. Great excuse to ride, and with the bike I can park for free on the sidewalk in front of the Javits.

As I enter the toll plaza to get on the TP, I see a single round headlight coming up behind me. I think, hmm, an HD rider, probably also going to the bike show. Anyway, the guy catches up to me and it's a beautiful R1100R. Black with pinstripes, wire wheels, chrome valve covers. We fall into formation and make our way in via the Lincoln Tunnel.

We park and say hello. Bill seems like a good guy and as it turns out he lives in the next town over, just a couple of miles away. I'll point him to this site, seems like he's always looking for people to ride with.

The bike show was ok, smaller than usual. The National Boat Show was also setting up but all the major players were there. Very good vendor area this year. I stopped by Roadgear to say hi to Whaycock but he wasn't there, just Mansoor and a woman working the booth. I'll look for him on Sunday.

The BMW booth was as usual, very well done. Lots of new hardware including a wacky looking K1200R with a metallic lime green paint job.

The new F800 GS was getting a lot of attention. It looks great in person.

One bike which really caught my attention was the new Suzuki B King. WOW. If I were in the market for a naked streetfighter, I would give this bike (the naked cousin of the Hayabusa) a hard look:

That's it for now, I'll post some pics after I go the the show on Sunday (I forgot my camera today).

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the report Tony. I hope to catch maybe the Atlanta show or possibly the D.C. show in January. The F800GS has caught my imagination, but then again, almost all new BMWs do.

Thanks Tony...I love the B-King...and it's the first concept pictures of it 7 years ago that I liked so much that when I saw the R1150R for the first time it reminded me of it with its tank shape and oil coolers..even though the ones on the B-King do nothing.

Motorcyclist has a big article on the B-King this month. I agree with you DJ on the looks of the tank. I thought the whole concept looked an awful lot like the current production K1200R though, which is to say pretty good. My first project would be to saw the mufflers off flush with the seat. Those things are a serious styling error, but nothing the Saws-All can't deal with. Dual upswept muffers, A short screen and some hard bags and we'd have ourselves a nice overnight delivery rig. You recall the ad..... "If you just absolutely have to get it there overnight" This might be just the thing.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

I couldn't make it to NYC this year but have been up there the last 2 years with friends from Spring Lake Heights, NJ.
I will be going to the one in DC on the 13th.
Can't wait to see the new GS! It looks so good!

hi, Tony,

The ST has been one of only two bikes to really turn my head since the RR.

Riding impressions compared? touring, twisties, city?
