Help with riding clothing

Post by mcollect »

This past weekend we went for a long ride, 12 hours. I left the house in mid 60's temp and hit a high of mid 80's, at night it was 45. I was wearing Hein Geriche leathers pants and jacket. The temps were comfortable as I could opem my legs and let air cool my crotch and the vents on the jacket cooled my top. But my undershorts became creased, Jockey boxers. The pants have a removable liner. I was wondering what to wear under the pants. Comando? Or do I borrow a pair of my wifes silk panties. I'm serious what do long distance riders wear under their trousers! BTW West Virginia has the most wonderful roads, curves, sweepers and almost no traffic. Route 150 is better then the Skyline Drive. No one was up there. Please don't spread this route around, we should keep it to ourselves.

undershorts

Post by GJBushman »

Lots of guys and gals will wear bicyclists shorts. I have a few different kinds of microfiber shorts that I wear that help, my favorite being the underarmour. I also have some underarmour cold gear tights that I will wear when the temps get exceedingly cold. I can't imagine boxers would be too comfortable.

Underarmour is good, but I also do boxers. If you go commando, keep it to yourself, and please do not offer your riding pants in the buy/sell section.

I would also think that textile riding gear is more comfortable than leather.

I have both textile and leather riding pants. Under either, I use silk, full length tights. These are made specifically to wick away moisture - more so for warmer weather, and work well for cool weather too. I bought them at a sporting goods store in the ski clothing section. These are the uninsulated type; they are very thin. For cold weather, a similar type, but insulated type can be used. It works well having another layer under the riding pants - kind of gets rid of the sticky feeling and lets the pants slide about easier.

Even with undies on, I am often reaching down my pants (hope nobody is looking at the stop light) and rearranging the living room  . Unless it's real cold, then the problems are very different, but still uncomfortable. NO GO COMMANDO.

Like the others have said, tights, stretchy biker type shorts, underarmor, etc. will get you more comfortable. Look for undies that don't have seams where your weight will be sitting.

I have tried several different brands of biker shorts. The little italian jobs with the padding in the crotch were the best...but only after removing the padding itself. Also the regular REI jocky/boxers that are made of that breathable material...Can't recall what that stuff's called right now, but they offer a very expensive version in the Aerostich catalog. Just get some from a sports place. Do not just wear regular boxers, unless you're into masochism.

I use Marmot silk weight long underwear. This stuff wicks great, has the silver function which keeps it fresh for a couple days, and is actually cooler than with nothing. The new Bamboo carbon stuff that Columbia and Patagonia sell is also good.

+1 on silk longjohns. They work best for me in cooler temps. If it's going to be COLD I prefer the MotoCoolStuff longjohns; although they're supposed to be for hot weather, I found them to be stuffy in hot, humid temps. They work far better for me in cold.

In warm to hot weather I prefer something in a microfiber wicking material. I have a couple pair of boxer briefs that work well. Get the stuff without seams, unless you want to be "arranging the living room" at stops (like IowaBeakster). This past summer I bought a pair of UnderArmour Heatgear longjohns/tights that worked pretty well for me. No seams, and they're full length, so my knee armor didn't irritate my skin.

I won't attempt to address the question of what you should/shouldn't wear.
However, I can assure you - most women would prefer not to share their silk panties or any other piece of lingerie with a man. You should buy your own. I'm sure someone in the lingerie department can help you with sizing.

Just sayin'......

I use Underarmor Boxer briefs and am very happy with them. All day comfort, no 'crotch rot', and with two pair, you can easily wash one in the sink at night and take a two week trip with only two pair of skivvies! :P

On my recent two week trip with with the wife, I made sure on long travel days, I was wearing one pairs of the Underarmor for comfort!

I would imagine full length silk or Underarmor tights would work as well!

Im using Champion C9 "Duo Dry" for a base layer in the hot weather... it's wicking and cheap enough at Target.

Haven't decided what to upgrade to yet for colder but probably going to go with underarmor...

Or maybe I'll stick with German brands and find an equivalent in Adidas

Currently wearing textile outer layer though! I quit smoking and I'm too fat now for the leathers

+ 1 on the bicycle shorts. Very effective. Buy the cheaper ones, as they'll have less padding.

Bike shorts for me every time. Spend the extra bucks for the 8 panel rather than the cheaper 6 or 4 - makes a huge difference.
